Edomites are descendants of Edom, or Esau. An ancient people who were enemies of the Israelites/Jacob. During the days of Abraham, the region which later became the home of the Edomites was occupied by more than one tribe of non-Israelite peoples. When Esau moved to this region with his family and possessions, the Horites already lived in the land. - Gen. 36:20 -
Edom and Israel/Jacob after Kadesh Barnea. After the years of wilderness wandering, Moses wanted to lead Israel northward to Canaan across Edom into Moab. The king of Edom, however, refused them passage - Num. 20:14-21 - forcing them to bypass Edom and Moab through the desert to the east. - Judg. 11:17-18 -
Later in the journey northward to Abel Acacia Grove in the plains of Moab across from Jericho - Num. 33:44-49 - Balaam prophesied that Israel would one day possess Edom. - "Edom becomes a conquered land; a conquered land is Seir" - Num. 24:18 -
From the Conquest Until the Division. In dividing the land of Canaan after the conquest, Joshua established Judah's border to the west of the Dead Sea and to the border of Edom. Josh. 15:1,21 - During the reign of Saul (first king of Israel) fought against Edom. - 1 Sam. 14:47 - But Edomites at times served in Saul's army. - 1 Sam. 21:7; 22:9 -
But king David (king of Israel) conquered Edom, along with a number of other adjacent countries, and stationed troops in the land. - 2 Sam. 8:13-14 - In later years, king Solomon promoted the building of a port on the northern coast of the Red Sea in Edomite territory. He also built a smeltery nearby as a significant part of his developing copper industry. - 1 Kin. 9:26-29 -
After the Division. During the time of the Divided Kingdom, a number of hostile encounters occurred between the nations of Judah or Israel and Edom. During Jehoshaphat's reign, Edomites raided Judah but were turned back. - 2 Chr. 20:1,8 - An attempt to reopen the port at Ezion Geber failed - 1 Kin. 22:48 - and the Edomites joined forces with those of Judah in Jehoshaphat's move to put down the rebellion of Mesha of Moab. - 2 Kin. 3:4-5 -
During the reign of Joram, Edom freed herself of Judah's control - 2 Kin. 8:20-22 - but again came under Judah's control when Amaziah assaulted and captured Sela, their capital city. Edom became a vassal state of Assyria, beginning about 736 B.C.
Edom the Place of the Nabateans. After the downfall of Judah in 586 B.C., Edom rejoiced. - Ps. 137:7 - Edomites settled in southern Judah as far north as Hebron, Nabateans occupied old Edom beginning in the third century B.C., continuing their civilization well into the first century A.D. During the period from about 400-100 B.C., Judas Maccabeus subdued the Edomites and they are forced, to be circumcised and then made them a part of the Jewish people. The Herod family of New Testament times was of Edomite stock.
Since no written Edomite records have been found, knowledge of the Edomites comes mainly from the Sacred Scripture/Holy Bible, archaeological excavations of their ancient cities, and references to Edom in Egyptian, Assyrian and Babylonian sources.
Israel/Jacob left with his possessions, and reached Beersheba. There he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. God spoke to Israel/Jacob in a vision at night, 'Jacob, Jacob' he said, 'I am here' God replied. 'I am God, the God of your father' God continued, 'Do not be afraid of going down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. - Gen. 46:1-3 -
These are the names of Israel's sons who came to Egypt, (Jacob's family) - Gen. 46:8-27 - Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob/Israel. - Gen. 30:24 - Joseph was sold into slavery and later rose to an important position in the Egyptian government. The six wives of Esau's and children in Canaan. Esau's migration and descendants in Seir and the chiefs of Edom.
Here are the descendants of Esau, who is Edom. Esau married women of Canaan: Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite, Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, who was the son of Zibeon the Horite, Basemath, the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth. Adah bore to Esau Eliphaz, Basemath bore Reuel, Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These are the sons of Esau born to him in the land of Canaan. - Gen. 36:1-5 -

Pseudepigrapha refers to a collection of Jewish books containing various forms of literature, using names of famous people in Israel's (Jacob's) history for the titles of the books. The real authors are unknown. Such names as Ezra, Baruch, Enoch, Solomon, Moses and Adam are used to add authority to the writing.
A few of these books are folk tales or sacred leg-ends. These include the 'Letter of Aristeas' the Book of Adam and Eve, and the Martyrdom of Isaiah. One book of Psalms, the Psalms of Solomon, has been included in the Pseudepiagrapha. Ethical and wisdom writings are also part of this collection.
One problem addressed by the pseudepiagraphal books is, Why do the wicked seem to prosper and the righteous suffer? Books like Jubilee, Enoch, and IV Ezra develop a careful scheme of history that shows the power of the world in the hands of the ruler of this age. The ruler of this age is Satan or Belial. The present age will end with God as Lord of all nations.
The books in the Pseudepigrapha were written by pious Jews (a member of the people and cultural community whose traditional religion is Judaism and who trace their origins through the ancient Hebrew people of Israel to Abraham.) living in either Palestine or Egypt. They were concerned that the Jews live according to the law of Moses.
The Book of Jubilee describes a conversation which took place on Mount Sinai between Moses and an angel of the Lord. The Martyrdom of Isaiah reports the sad news of the death of the great prophet. Through this story, the writer (using Isaiah's name) emphasizes how far Israel has gone astray. To protest against the growing secularization of the Pharisees, The Assumption of Moses was written around A.D. 7 to 29.
The Book of Adam and Eve, written in the middle of the first Christian century, is probably a protest against Christians. It tells about the future resurrection which was promised to Adam. The Testament of the Twelve Patriarchs is a book with many sub-books, describing the patriarch Jacob (Israel) blessing his twelve sons before his death.
It was written around 105 B.C. by a Pharisee, it tells about the intense hope for a Messiah held by some Jews during this period (100 -50 B.C.) The value of this book is the contribution it makes to an understanding of forgiveness, the two great commandments, the Messianic expectation, the resurrection, the Antichrist, demonology, and the other teachings which were later developed in the New Testament.
The Jacob's well where Jesus talked to the Samaritan woman. - John 4:1-26 - This is the earliest reference to Jacob's well; it is not mentioned in the Old Testament. The well, known as 'Bir Ya'qub' ("the well of Jacob") is near Tell Balatah, regarded by some scholars as ancient Shechem.
