The election of Matthias - Acts 1:15-26 - N. T. -

One day Peter stood up to speak to the brothers - there were about a hundred and twenty persons in the congregation; 'Brothers, the passage of scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretells the fate of Judas, who offered himself as a guide to the men who arrested Jesus - after having been one of our number and actually sharing this ministry of ours. As you know he bought a field with the money he was paid for his crime. He fell headlong and burst open, and all his entrails poured out. Everybody in Jerusalem heard about it and the field came to be called the Bloody Arce, in their language Hakeldama. Now in the Book of Psalms it says:

Let his camp be reduced to ruin,                                                                                                                    Let there be no one to live in it.                                                                          And again:

Let someone else take his office.

'We must therefore choose someone who has been with us the whole time that the Lord Jesus was travelling round with us, someone who was with us right from the time when John was baptising until the day when he was taken up from us - and he can act with us as a witness to his resurrection.'

Having nominated two candidates, Joseph known as Barsabbas, whose surname was Justus, and Matthias, they prayed, 'Lord, you can read everyone's heart; show us therefore which of these two you have chosen to take over this ministry and the apostolate, which Judas abandoned to go to his proper place'. They then drew lots for them, and as the lot fell to Matthias, he was listed as one of the twelve apostles.

Cf. - Acts 1:20 -

Cf. - Psalms 41:9 - O. T. - Even my closest and most trusted friend, who shared my table, rebels against me.

Cf. - John 13:18 - N. T. - I am not speaking about all of you: I know the ones I have chosen; but what scripture says must be fulfilled: Someone who shares my table rebels against me.

Cf. - Luke 22:47-48 - N. T. - Jesus was still speaking when a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, who went to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?'

Cf. - Matthew 27:3-10 - N. T. - When he found that Jesus had been condemned, Judas his betrayer was filled with remorse and took the thirty silver pieces back to the chief priests and elders. 'I have sinned;' Judas said 'I have betrayed innocent blood.' 'What is that to us?' they replied 'That is your concern.' And flinging down the silver pieces in the sanctuary he made off, and went and hanged himself. The chief priests picked up the silver pieces and said, 'It is against the Law to put this into the treasury; it is blood-money'. So they discussed the matter and bought the plotter's field with it as a graveyard for foreigners, and this is why the field is called the Field of Blood today. The words of the prophet Jeremiah were then fulfilled: And they took the thirty silver pieces, the sum of which the precious One was priced by the children of Israel, and they gave them for the potter's field, just as the Lord directed me.

Cf. - Wisdom 4:19 - O. T. - Soon they will be corpses without honour, objects of scorn among the dead for ever. The Lord will dash them down headlong, dumb. He will tear them from their foundations, they will be utterly laid waste, anguish will be theirs, and their memory shall perish.

Cf. - Psalms 69:25; Psalms 109:8 - O. T. - May their camp be reduced to ruin, and their tents left unoccupied: for hounding a man after you had struck him, for adding more wounds to those which you inflicted. Let his life be cut short, let someone else take his office.

Cf. - John 17:12 N. T. - While I was with them, I kept those you had given me true to your name. I have watched over them and not one is lost except the one who chose to be lost, and this was to fulfill the scriptures.

Cf. - Acts 1:8+; 10:35; 13:9+; 15:8 -

Cf. - Jeremiah 11:20-23 - O. T. - But you, Yahweh Sabaoth, who pronounce a just sentence, who probe the loins and heart, let me see the vengeance you will take on them, for I have committed my cause to you. This is how Yahweh has spoken against the men of Anathoth who are determined to kill me and have wanted me, 'Do not prophesy in the name of Yahweh or you will die at our hands!' 'This is how I will punish them. Their young men shall die by the sword, their sons and daughters by famine. No one will be left when I bring disaster on the men of Anathoth, when the year comes for their punishment.'

Cf. - Luke 16:14-15 - N. T. - The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and laughed at him. He said to them, 'You are the very ones who pass yourselves off as virtuous in people's sight, but God knows your hearts. For what is thought highly of by men is loathsome in the sight of God.

Cf. - Revelation 2:23 - N. T. - Unless they repent of their practices; and I will see that her children die, so that all the churches realise that it is I who search heart and loins and give each one of you what your behaviour deserves.

Cf. - Exodus 33:7-9 - O. T. - Moses used to take the Tent and pitch it outside the camp, at some distance from the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting. Anyone who had to consult Yahweh would go out to the Tent of Meeting, outside the camp. Whenever Moses went out to the Tent, all the people would rise. Every man would stand at the door of his tent and watch Moses until he reached the Tent; the pillar of cloud would come down and station itself at the entrance to the Tent, and Yahweh would speak with Moses.

Cf. - 1 Samuel 14:41-42 - O. T. - Then Saul said, 'Yahweh, God of Israel, why did you not answer your servant today? If the faults lies on me or on my son Jonathan, O Yahweh, God of Israel, give Urim: if the fault lies on your people Israel, give Thummim.' Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free. Saul said, 'Cast the lot between me and my son Jonathan'; and Jonathan was indicated.                       -  PAGE  88  -

              I.   THE  JERUSALEM  CHURCH

The group of apostles - Acts 1:12-14 - N. T. -

So from the Mount of Olives, as it is called, they went back to Jerusalem, a short distance away, no more than a Sabbath walk; and when they reached the city they went to the upper room where they were staying; there were Peter and John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Jude son of James. All these joined in continuous prayer, together with several women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Cf. - Luke 6:13-16 - N. T. - When day came Jesus summoned his disciples and picked out twelve of them; he called them 'apostles': Simon whom he called Peter, and his brother Andrew; James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot who became a traitor.

Cf. - Acts 2:42,46; 6:4 -

Cf. - Romans 12:12 - N. T. - Do not give up if trials come; and keep on praying.

Cf. - Luke 23:49 - N. T. - All his friends stood at a distance; so also did the women who had accompanied him from Galilee, and they saw all this happen.

The ascension - Acts 1:6-11 - N. T. -

Now having met together, they asked Jesus, 'Lord, has the time come?' Are you going to restore the kingdom of Israel?' Jesus replied, 'It is not for you to know times or dates that the Father has decided by his own authority, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth'.

As Jesus said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, 'Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.'

Cf. - Daniel 2:21 - O. T. - His, to control the procession of times and seasons, to make and unmake kings, to confer wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with wit to discern.

Cf. - Matthew 24:36p - N. T. - Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But as for that and hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, no one but the Father only.

Cf. - Thessalonians 5:1-3 - N. T. - You will not be expecting us to write anything to you, brothers and sisters, about 'times and seasons', since you know very well that the Day of the Lord is going to come like a thief in the night. It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and peaceful it is' that the worst suddenly happens, as suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there will be no way for anybody to evade it.

Cf. - Isaiah 43:10-11 - O. T. - You yourselves are my witnesses - it is Yahweh who speaks - my servants whom I have chosen, that men may know and believe me and understand that it is I. No god was formed before me, nor will be after me. I, I am Yahweh, there is no other saviour but me.

Cf. - Matthew 28:19-20 - N. T. - Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.

Cf. - Luke 24:44-48 - N. T. - Then Jesus told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, has to be fulfilled'. Jesus then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, 'So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.'

Cf. - 2 Kings 2:11-12 - O. T. - Now as they walked on, talking as they went, a chariot of fire appeared and horses of fire, coming between the two of them; and Elijah went up to heaven in the whirlwind. Elisha saw it, and shouted, 'My father! My father! Chariot of Israel and its chargers!'

Cf. - Mark 16:19-20 - N. T. - And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

Cf. - Luke 24:50-52 - N. T. - Then Jesus took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as Jesus blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy.

Cf. - John 20:17-18 - N. T. - Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and find the brothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' So Mary of Magdala went and told the disciples that she has seen the Lord and that Jesus had said these things to her.

Cf. - Romans 10:5-13 - N. T. - When Moses refers to being justified by the Law, he writes: those who keep the Law will draw life from it. But the righteousness that comes from faith says this; Do not tell yourself you have to bring Christ back from the dead as in the text: Who will go down to the underworld? On the positive side it says: The word, that is the faith we proclaim, is very near to you, it is your lips and in your heart. If you lips confess that Jesus is Lord and if you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, then you will be saved. By believing from the heart you are made righteous; by confessing with your lips you are saved. When Sacred Scripture says: those who believe in Jesus will have  no cause for shame, it make no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

Cf. - Ephesians 4:7-10 - N. T. - Each one of us, however, has been given his own share of grace, given as Christ allotted it. It was said that he would: When he ascended to the height, he captured prisoners, he gave gifts to men. When it says, 'he ascended', what can it mean if not that he descended right down to the lower regions of the earth? The one who rose higher than all the heavens to fill all things is none other than the one who descended.

Cf. - 1 Peter 3:22 - N. T. - Jesus Christ, who has entered heaven and is at God's right hand, now that he has made the angels and Dominations and Powers his subjects.

Cf. - Luke 24:3-4 - N. T. - But on entering discovered that the body of the Lord Jesus was not there. As they stood there not knowing what to think, two men in brilliant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.

Cf. - Acts 3:20 -

Cf. - Zechariah 14:3-5 - O. T. - Then Yahweh will take the field; he will fight against these nations as he fights in the day of battle. On that day, his feet will rest on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem from the east. The Mount of Olives will be split in half from east to west, forming a huge gorge; half the Mount will recede northwards, the other half southwards. And the Vale of Hinnom will be filled up from Goah to Jasol; it will be blocked as it was by the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Yahweh your God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

-  THE  ACTS  OF  THE  APOSTLES  -

Prologue - Acts 1:1-5 - N. T. -

In my earlier work, Theophilus, I dealt with everything Jesus had done and taught from the beginning until the day he gave his instructions to the apostles he had chosen through the Holy Spirit, and was taken up to heaven. Jesus had shown himself alive to them after his Passion by many demonstrations: for forty days he had continued to appear to them and tell them about the kingdom of God.

When he had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. 'It is' he had said 'what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'

Cf. - Luke 1:1-4 - N. T. - Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have taken place among us, exactly as these were handed down to us by those who from the outset were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, I in my turn, after carefully going over the whole story from the beginning, have decided to write an ordered account for you, Theophilus, so that your Excellency may learn how well founded the teaching is that you have received.

Cf. - Acts 1:22 -

Cf. - Matthew 28:18-20 - N. T. - Jesus said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.

Cf. - Luke 24:49-53 - N. T. - 'And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from on high.' Then Jesus Christ took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God.

Cf. - 1 Timothy 3:16 - N. T. - Without doubt, the mystery of our religion is very deep indeed: Jesus was made visible in the flesh, attested by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed to the pagans, believed in by the world, taken up in glory.

Cf. - Acts 10:40-41; 13:31 -

Cf. - Matthew 28:10-15 - N. T. - 'Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers that they must leave for Galilee; they will see me there'. While they were on their way, some of the guards went off into the city to tell the chief priests all that had happened. These held a meeting with the elders and, after some discussion, handed a considerable sum of money to the soldiers with these instructions, 'This is what you must say, "His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep". And should the governor come to hear of this, we undertake to put things right with him ourselves and to see that you do not get into trouble.' The soldiers took the money and carried out their instructions, and to this day that is the story among the Jews.

Cf. - Acts 19:8 -

Cf. - Luke 24:42-43, 48-49 - N. T. - 'Have you anything here to eat?' And they offered Jesus a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes. You are witnesses to this. 'And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with the power from high.'

Cf. - Acts 2:33+ -

Cf. - Galatians 3:14 - N. T. - This was done so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might include the pagans, and so that through faith we might receive the promised Spirit.

Cf. - Ephesians 1:13-14 - N. T. - Now you too, in Christ Jesus, have heard the message of the truth and the good news of your salvation, and have believed it; and you too have been stamped with the seal of the Holy Spirit of the Promise, the pledge of our inheritance which brings freedom for those whom God has taken for his own, to make his glory praised.

Cf. - Acts 11:16 -

Cf. - Luke 3:15-16p - N. T. - A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John the Baptist might be the Christ, so John declared before them all, I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire.       -  PAGE  85  -
