Lament for Jerusalem - Luke 19:41-44 - N. T. -

As Jesus drew new and came in sight of the city he shed tears over it and said, 'If you in your turn had only understood on this day the message of peace! But, alas, it is hidden from your eyes! Yes, a time is coming when your enemies will raise fortifications all round you, when they will encircle you and hem you in on every side; they will dash you and the children inside your walls to the ground; they will leave not one stone standing on another within you - and all because you did not recognise your opportunity when God offered it!'

Cf. - Luke 13:34-35 -

Cf. - Deuteronomy 28:36-37 - O. T. - Yahweh will send you and the king you set over you, to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and of stone. You will become a thing of horror, a proverb, and a byword to all the peoples among whom Yahweh takes you.

Cf. - Jeremiah 26:1-24 - O. T. - JEREMIAH  THE  TRUE  PROHET - Jeremiah's discourse against the Temple: his arrest and condemnation.

Cf. - Isaiah 29:3 - O. T. - You will be an Ariel for me, like David I will encamp against you, I will blockade you with palisades, and mount siege-works against you.

Cf. - Luke 1:68; 12:54-56 -

The expulsion of the dealers from the Temple - Luke 19:45-46 - N. T. -

Then Jesus went into the Temple and began driving out those who were selling. 'According to scripture,' he said 'my house will be a house of prayer. But you have turned it into a robbers' den.'

Cf. - Matthew 21:12-13 - N. T. - Jesus then went into the Temple and drove out all those who were selling and buying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling pigeons. 'According to scripture' he said 'my house will be called a house of prayer; but you turning it into a robbers 'den.'

Cf. - Mark 11:15-17 - N. T. - So they reached Jerusalem and Jesus went into the Temple and began driving out those who were selling and buying there; he upset the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling pigeons. Nor would Jesus allow anyone to carry anything through the Temple. And he taught them and said, 'Does not scripture say: My house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples? But you turned it into a robbers' den.'

Cf. - John 2:13-17 - N. T. - Just before the Jewish Passover Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and in the Temple he found people selling cattle and sheep and pigeons, and the money changers sitting at their counters there. Making a whip out of some cord, he drove them all out of the Temple, cattle and sheep as well, scattered the money changers' coins, knocked their tables over and said to the pigeon-sellers, 'Take all this out of here and stop turning my Father's house into a market'. Then his disciples remembered the words of scripture: Zeal for your house will devour me.

Cf. - Isaiah 56:7 - O. T. - Let the wicked man abandon his ways, the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn back to Yahweh who will take pity on him, to our God who is rich in forgiving.

Cf. - Jeremiah 7:11 - O. T. - And if you do not follow alien gods, to your own ruin, then here in this place I will stay with you, in the land that long ago I gave to your fathers for ever.

Jesus teaches in the Temple - Luke 19:47-48 - N. T. -

Jesus taught in the Temple everyday. The chief priests and the scribes, with the support of the leading citizens, tried to do away with him, but they did not see how they could carry this out because the people as a whole hung on his words.

Cf. - Luke 21:37; 22:53 -

Cf. - John 18:19-20 - N. T. - The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Jesus answered, 'I have spoken openly for all the world to hear; I have always taught in the synagogue and in the Temple where all the Jews meet together: I have said nothing in secret. But why ask me?

Cf. - Luke 11:53+; 4:15+ -

Cf. - Mark 11:18 - N. T. - This came to the ears of the chief priests and the scribes, and they tried to find some way of doing away with Jesus; they were afraid of him because the people were carried away by his teaching.

The Lord Jesus Christ, promised to us that our mission on this earth is really and utmost importance for our own salvation.

"I tell you solemnly, there is no one who has left house, wife, brothers, parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God who will not be given repayment many times over in this present time, in the world to come, Eternal Life." - Luke 18:28-30 -

'Why do you call Me, "Lord, Lord" and not do what I say?' - Luke 6:46 -

'Fear God and praise Him because the time has come for Him to sit in judgement; worship the maker of heaven and earth and sea and every water-spring.' - Revelation 14:7 -

We are all aware who it was that said: Vengeance is mine; I will repay. And again: The Lord will judge his people. It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. - Hebrews 10:31 -

When Sacred Scripture says: those who believe in him will have no cause for shame, it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord, Jesus Christ, who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

But they will not ask for his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as Sacred Scripture say: The footsteps of those who bring good news is a welcome sound.

Not everyone, of course, listens to the Good News. As prophet Isaiah says: Lord, how many believed what we proclaimed? So faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the word of Christ Jesus. [ 'Word of God' ] - Romans 10:11-17 -

IF WE LIVE BY THE TRUTH AND IN LOVE, WE SHALL GROW IN ALL WAYS INTO CHRIST JESUS, WHO IS THE HEAD BY WHOM THE WHOLE BODY IS FITTED AND JOINED TOGETHER, EVERY JOINT ADDING ITS OWN STRENGTH, FOR EACH SEPARATE PART TO WORK ACCORDING TO IT FUNCTION. SO THE BODY GROWS UNTIL IT HAS BUILT ITSELF UP, IN LOVE." - EPHESIANS 4:15-16 -

Just as God originally inspired the Sacred Scripture/Holy Bible, He has used this means to preserve His Word for future generations. But behind the writing lay periods of time when these messages were circulated in spoken form. [Oral Tradition] The stories of the patriarchs were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth before they were written. [Written Tradition] The messages of the prophets were delivered orally before they were fixed in writing. Narratives of the life and ministry of Christ Jesus were repeated orally for two or three decades before they were given written form.

                                             V.  THE  JERUSALEM  MINISTRY
The Messiah enters Jerusalem - Luke 19:28-38 - N. T. -

When Jesus had said this he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. Now when he was near Bethphage and Bethany, close by the Mount of Olives as it is called, Jesus sent two of the disciples, telling them, 'Go off to the village opposite, and as you enter it you will find a tethered colt that no one has yet ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, "Why are you untying it?" you are to say this, "The Master needs it". The messengers went off and found everything just as Jesus had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owner said, 'Why are you untying that colt?' and they answered, 'The Master needs it'.

So they took the colt to Jesus, and throwing their garments over its back they helped Jesus on to it. As he moved off, people spread their cloaks in the road, and now, as he was approaching the downward slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole group of disciples joyfully began to praise God at the top of their voices for all the miracles they had seen. They cried out: 'Blessings on the King who comes, in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest heavens!'

Jesus defends his disciples for acclaiming him - Luke 19:39-40 - N. T. -

Some Pharisees in the crowd said to him, Master, check your disciples, but Jesus answered, 'I tell you, if these keep silence the stones will cry out'.

Cf. - Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; John 12:12-19 - N. T. - The next day the crowds who who had come up for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took branches of palm and went out to meet him, shouting, 'Hosanna! Blessings on the King of Israel, who comes in the name of the Lord.' Jesus found a young donkey and mounted it - as scripture says: Do not be afraid, daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, mounted on the colt of a donkey.

At the time his disciples did not understand this, but later, after Jesus had been glorified, they remembered that this had been written about him and that this was in fact how they had received him. All who had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead were telling how they had witnessed it; it was because of this, too, that the crowd came out to meet him: they had heard that he had given this sign. Then the Pharisees said to one another, 'You see, there is nothing you can do; look, the whole world is running after him!'

Cf. - Luke 2:38+, 9:51, 1:14+, 2:20+, 4:15+

Cf. - Psalms 118:26 - O. T. -; - Luke 2:14 - N. T. - Blessings on him who comes in the name of Yahweh! We bless you from the house of Yahweh. 'Glory to God in the highest heaven, and peace to men who enjoy his favour'.

Cf. - Matthew 21:14-17 - N. T. - There were also blind and lame people who came to Jesus in the Temple, and he cured them. At the sight of the wonderful things he did and of the children shouting, 'Hosanna to the Son of David' in the Temple, the chief priests and the scribes were indignant. 'Do you hear what they are saying?' they said to him. 'Yes, 'Jesus answered 'have you never read this: By the mouths of children, babes in arms, you have made sure of praise?' With that Jesus left them and went out of the city to Bethany where he spent the night.

Parable of the pounds - Luke 19:11-27 - N. T. -

While the people were listening to this Jesus went on to tell a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they imagined that the kingdom of God was going to show itself then and there. Accordingly, Jesus said, 'A man of noble birth went to a distant country to be appointed king and afterwards return. He summoned ten of his servants and gave them ten pounds. "Do business with these" he told them "until I get back." But his compatriots detested him and sent a delegation to follow him with this message, "We do not want this man to be our king".

Now on his return, having received his appointment as king, he sent for those servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what profit each had made. The first came in and said, "Sir, your one pound has brought ten". "Well done, my good servant!' he replied "Since you have proved yourself faithful in a very small thing, you shall have the government of ten cities." Then came the second and said, "Sir, your one pound has made five". To this one also he said, "And you shall be in charge of five cities".

Next came the other and said, "Sir, here is your pound. I put it away safely in a piece of linen because I was afraid of you; for you are an exacting man: you pick up what you have not put down and reap what you have not sown." "You wicked servant!" he said "Out of your own mouth I condemn you. So you knew I was an exacting man, picking up what I have not put down and reaping what I have not sown? Then why did you not put my money in the bank? On my return I could have drawn it out with interest."

And he said to those standing by, "Take the pound from him and give it to the man who has ten pounds". And they said to him, "But, sir, he has ten pounds..." "I tell you, to everyone who has will be given more; but from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

"But as for my enemies who did not want me for their king, bring them here and execute them in my presence."'

Cf. - Matthew 25:14-30 - N. T. - It is like a man on his way abroad who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, to a third one; each in proportion to his ability. Then he set out. The man who had received the five talents promptly went and traded with them and made five more. The man who had received two made two more in the same way. But the man who had received one went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. Now a long time after, the master of those servants came back and went through his accounts with them.

The man who had received the five talents came forward bringing five more. "Sir," he said "you entrusted me with five talents; here are five more that I have made." His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness".

Next the man with the two talents came forward. "Sir," he said "you entrusted me with two talents; here are two more that I have made." His master said to him, "Well done, good and faithful servant; you have shown you can be faithful in small things, I will trust you with greater; come and join in your master's happiness".

Last came forward the man who had the one talent. "Sir," said he "I had heard you were a hard man, reaping where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered; so I was afraid, and went off and hid your talent in the ground. here it is; it was yours, you have it back." But his master answered him, "You wicked and lazy servant! So you knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered? Well, then, you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have recovered my capital with interest. So now, take the talent from him and give it to the man who has the ten talents.

For to everyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away. As for the good-for-nothing servant, throw him out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth."

Cf. - Luke 2:38+ -

Cf. - Mark 13:33-34 - N. T. - Be on guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come. It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake.

Cf. - Psalms 2:1-2 - O. T. - Why this uproar among the nations? Why this impotent muttering of pagans - kings on earth rising in revolt, princes plotting against Yahweh and his Anointed.

Cf. - John 19:15, 19-21 - N. T. - 'Here is your king' said Pilate to the Jews. 'Take him away, take him away!' they said. 'Crucify him!' 'Do you want me to crucify your king?' said Pilate. Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: 'Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews'. This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate, 'You should not write "King of the Jews", but "This man said: I am King of the Jews"'. Pilate answered, 'What I have written, I have written'.

Cf. - Luke 16:10, 8:18 -

Cf. - Matthew 13:12 - N. T. - For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away.

Cf. - Mark 4:24-25 - N. T. - Jesus also said to them, 'Take notice of what you are hearing. The amount you measure out is the amount you will be given - and more besides; for the man who has will be given more; from the man who has not, even what he has will be taken away.'                                                                                                                                                            -  PAGE  61  -                                                                                                                                      V.  THE  JERUSALEM  MINISTRY
