Philip baptises a eunuch - Acts 8:26-40 - N. T. -

The angel of the Lord spoke to Philip saying, 'Be ready to set out at noon along the road that goes from Jerusalem down to Gaza, the desert road'. So he set off on his journey. Now it happened that an Ethiopian had been on pilgrimage to Jerusalem; he was a eunuch and an officer at the court of the kandake, or queen, of Ethiopia, and was in fact her chief treasurer. He was now on his way home; and as he sat in his chariot he was reading the prophet Isaiah. The Spirit said to Philip, 'Go up and meet that chariot'. When Philip ran up, he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, 'Do you understand what you are reading?' 'How can I' he replied 'unless I have someone to guide me?' So he invited Philip to get in and sit by his side. Now the passage of scripture he was reading was this:

Like a sheep that is led to the slaughter-house,
like a lamb that is dumb in front of its shearers,
like these he never opens his mouth.
He has been humiliated and has no one to defend him.
Who will ever talk about his descendants,
since his life on earth has been cut short!

The eunuch turned to Philip and said, 'Tell me, is the prophet referring to himself or someone else?' Starting, therefore, with this text of scripture Philip proceeded to explain the Good News of Jesus to him.

Further along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, 'Look, there is some water here; is there anything to stop me being baptised?' He ordered the chariot to stop, then Philip baptised him. But after they had come up out of the water again Philip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord, and the eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Philip found that he had reached Azotus and continued his journey proclaiming the Good News in every town as far as Caesarea.

Cf. - Matthew 1:20-25 - N. T. - Joseph had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus, because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins.' Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel, a name which means 'God-is-with-us'. When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord told him to do: he took his wife to his home and though he had not had intercourse with her, she gave birth to a son; and he named him Jesus.

Cf. - 1 Kings 8:41-43 - O. T. - And the foreigner too, not belonging to your people Israel, if he comes from a distant country for the sake of your name - for men will hear of your name, of your mighty hand and outstretched arm - if he comes and prays in this Temple, hear from heaven where your home is, and grant all the foreigner asks, so that all the peoples of the earth may come to know your name and, like your people Israel, revere you, and know that your name is given to the Temple I have built.

Cf. - Psalm 68:31 - O. T. - Ambassadors will come from Egypt, Ethiopia will stretch out her hands to God.

Cf. - Isaiah 56:3-7 - O. T. - Let no foreigner who has attached himself to Yahweh say, 'Yahweh will surely exclude me from his people'. Let no eunuch say, 'And I, I am a dried-up tree'. For Yahweh says this: To the eunuchs who observe my Sabbaths, and resolve to do what pleases me and cling to my covenant. I will give, in my house and within my walls, a monument and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that shall never be effaced.

Foreigners who have attached themselves to Yahweh to serve him and to love his name and be his servants - all who observe the Sabbath, not profaning it, and cling to my covenant - these I will bring to my holy mountain. I will make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their holocausts their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar, for my house will be called a house of prayer for all the peoples.

Cf. - Acts 1:8+ -

Cf. - Romans 10:14 - N. T. - But they will not ask his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they have heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher.

Cf. - Isaiah 53:7-8 - O. T. - Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly, he never opened his mouth, like a lamb that is led to the slaughter-house, like a sheep that is dumb before its shearers never opening its mouth. By force and by law he was taken; would anyone plead his cause? Yes, he was torn away from the land of the living; for our faults struck down in death.

Cf. - Luke 18:31-34; 24:27 - N. T. - Then taking the Twelve aside Jesus said to them, 'Now we are going to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man is to come true. For he will be handed over to the pagans and will be mocked, maltreated and spat on, and when they have scourged him they will put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.' But they could make nothing of this; what Jesus said was quite obscure to them, they had no idea what it meant.

Cf. - Acts 10:47; 16:33 -

Cf. - 1 Kings 18:12-15 - O. T. - But as soon as I leave you, the spirit of Yahweh will carry you away and I shall not know where; I shall come and tell Ahab; he will not be able to find you, and will kill me. Yet from his youth your servant has revered Yahweh. Has no one told my lord what I did when Jezebel butchered the prophets of Yahweh, how I hid a hundred of them in a cave, fifty at a time, and kept them provided with food and water? And now you say to me, "Go and tell your master: Elijah is here". Why, he will kill me! Elijah replied, 'As Yahweh Sabaoth lives, whom I serve, I shall present myself before him today!'

Cf. - Luke 24:31-32 - N. T. - And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?'

Philip in Samaria - Acts 8:4-8 - N. T. -

Those who had escaped went place to place preaching the Good News. One of them was Philip who went to a Samaritan town and proclaimed the Christ to them. The people united in welcoming the message Philip preached, either because they had heard of the miracles he worked or because they saw them for themselves. There were, for example, unclean spirits that came shrieking out of many who were possessed, and several paralytics and cripples were cured. As a result there was great rejoicing in that town.

=Acts 11:19 - Cf. - 6:5; 21:8; 18:5+; 5:16 -

Cf. - Matthew 8:29-30 - N. T. - They stood there shouting, 'What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the time?'

Cf. - Acts 28:8-9; 2:46+ -

Simon the magician - Acts 8:9-25 - N. T. -

Now a man called Simon had already practiced magic arts in the town and astounded the Samaritan people. He had given it out that he was someone momentous, and everyone believed what he said; eminent citizens and ordinary people alike had declared, 'He is the divine power that is called Great'. They had only been won over to him because of the long time he had spent working on them with his magic. But when they believed Philip's preaching of the Good News about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptised, both men and women, and even Simon himself became a believer. After his baptism Simon, who went round constantly with Philip, was astonished when he saw the wonders and great miracles that took place.

When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, and they went down there, and prayed for the Samaritans to receive the Holy Spirit, for as yet he had not come down on any of them: they had only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

When Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the imposition of hands by the apostles, he offered them some money. 'Give me the same power' he said 'so that anyone I lay my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.' Peter answered, 'May your silver be lost forever, and you with it, for thinking that money could buy what God has given nothing! You have no share, no rights, in this: God can see how your heart is warped. Repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord; you may still be forgiven for thinking as you did; it is plain to me that you are trapped in the bitterness of gall and the chains of sin.' 'Pray to the Lord for me yourselves' Simon replied 'so that none of the things you have spoken about may happen to me.'

Having given their testimony and proclaimed the word of the Lord, they went back to Jerusalem, preaching the Good News to a number of Samaritan villages.

- Acts 1:5+; 11:1,22 -

Cf. - John 4:38 - N. T. - I sent you to reap a harvest you had not worked for. Others worked for it; and you have come into the rewards of their trouble.

Cf. - Luke 8:51-56 - N. T. - When Jesus came to the house he allowed no one to go in with him except Peter and John and James, and the child's father and mother. They were all weeping and mourning for her, but Jesus said, 'Stop crying; she is not dead, but asleep'. But they laughed at him, knowing she was dead. But taking her by the hand Jesus called to her. 'Child, get up'. And her spirit returned and she got up at once. Then he told them to give her something to eat. Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.

- Acts 1:5+,19; 10:44 -

Cf. - Deuteronomy 29:17 - O. T. - You have seen their abominations and their idols, the wood, the stone, the silver and gold they have in their countries. The stoning of Stephen, Saul as persecutor - Acts 7:60; 8:1-3 - N. T. -

But Stephen, filled with the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at God's right hand. 'I can see heaven thrown open' Stephen said 'and the Son of Man at the right hand of God.' At this all the members of the council shouted out and stopped their ears with their hands; then they all rushed at him, sent him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses put down their clothes at the feet of a young man called Saul (Paul). As they were stoning him, Stephen said in invocation, 'Lord Jesus, receive my spirit'. Then he knelt down and said aloud, 'Lord, do not hold this sin against them'; and with these words he fell asleep.

Saul entirely approved of the killing. That day a bitter persecution started against the church in Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles fled to the country districts of Judaea and Samaria. There were some devout people, however, who buried Stephen and made great mourning for him.

Saul (Paul) then worked for the total destruction of the Church; he went from house to house arresting both men and women and sending them to prison.

Cf. - Exodus 24:16-18 - O. T. - The cloud covered the mountain, and the glory of Yahweh settled on the mountain of Sinai; for six days the cloud covered it, and on the seventh day Yahweh called to Moses from inside the cloud. To the eyes of the sons of Israel the glory of Yahweh seemed like a devouring fire on the mountain top. Moses went right into the cloud. He went up the mountain, and stayed there for forty days and forty nights.

Cf. - Acts 2:33+ -

Cf. - Matthew 26:64-66 - N. T. - 'Moreover, I tell you that from this time onward you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.' At this, the high priest tore his clothes and said, 'He has blasphemed. What need of witnesses have we now? There! You have just heard the blasphemy. What is your opinion?' They answered, 'He deserves to die'.

Cf. - Daniel 7:13 - O. T. - I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence.

Cf. - Matthew 8:20-22 - N. T. - Jesus replied, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head'. Another man, one of his disciples, said to him, 'Sir, let me go and bury my father first'. But Jesus replied, 'Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead'.

Cf. - Hebrews 13:12 - N. T. - Jesus too suffered outside the gate to sanctify the people with his own blood.

Cf. - Acts 22:20; 26:10 -

Cf. - Galatians 1:13-14 - N. T. - You must have heard of my career as a practicing Jew, how merciless I (Saul/Paul) was in persecuting the Church of God, how much damage I did to it, how I stood out among other Jews of my generation, and how enthusiastic I was for the traditions of my ancestors.

Cf. - Psalm 31:5 - O. T. - Into your hands I commit my spirit, you have redeemed me, Yahweh.

Cf. - Luke 23:46, 34; 22:20 - N. T. - When Jesus had cried out in a loud voice, he said, 'Father, into your hands I commit my spirit'. With these words he breathed his last. Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing'. Then they cast lots to share out his clothing. Jesus did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you.

Cf. - John 16:2 - N. T. - They will expel you from the synagogues, and indeed the hour is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is doing a holy duty for God.

Cf. - Acts 9:1-2; 22:4; 26:10-11 -

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 15:9-10 - N. T. - I (Saul/Paul) am the least of the apostles; in fact, since I persecuted the Church of God, I hardly deserve the name apostle; but by God's grace that is what I am, and the grace that he gave me has not been fruitless.

Cf. - Galatians 1:13-14 - N. T. -

Cf. - Philippians 3:6 - N. T. - I was a Pharisee; as for working for religion, I was a persecutor of the Church; as far as the law can make you perfect, I was faultless.

Cf. - 1 Timothy 1:13-14 - N. T. - Even though I used to be a blasphemer and did all I could to injure and discredit the faith. Mercy, however, was shown me, because until I became a believer I had been acting in ignorance; and the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.                                                                                                                                                                                               -  PAGE  106  -
