Temptation in the wilderness - Luke 4:1-4 - N. T. -

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit through the wilderness, being tempted there by the devil for forty days. During that time he ate nothing and at the end he was hungry. Then the devil said to him, 'If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to turn into a loaf'. But Jesus replied, 'Sacred Scripture says: Man does not live on bread alone'.

Cf. - Matthew 4-11; Mark 1:12-13 - N. T. - Immediately afterwards the Spirit drove him out into the wilderness and he returned there for forty days, and was tempted by Satan. He was with the wild beasts, and the angels looked after him.

Cf. - Luke 10:21 -

Cf. - Deuteronomy 8:2-3 - O. T. -  Remember how Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, to test you and know your inmost heart - whether you would keep his commandments or not. He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor your fathers had known, to make you understand that man does not live on bread alone but that man lives on everything that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.

- Luke 4:5-8 - N. T. -

Then leading him to a height, the devil showed him in a moment of time all the kingdoms of the world and said to him, 'I will give you all this power and the glory of these kingdoms, for it has been committed to me and I give it to anyone I choose. Worship me, then, and it shall all be yours.' But Jesus answered him, 'Sacred Scripture says: You must worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone'.

Cf. - Jeremiah 27:5 - O. T. - Yahweh Sabaoth, the God of Israel, says this: You must tell your masters this: I by my great power and outstretched arm made the earth, man and the animals that are on earth. And I can give it to whom I please.

Cf. - Revelation 13:1-10 - N. T. - Then I saw a beast emerge from the sea: it had seven heads and ten horns, with a coronet on each of its ten horns, and its heads were marked with blasphemous titles. I saw that the beast was like a leopard, with paws like a bear and a mouth like a lion; the dragon had handed over to it his own power and his throne and his worldwide authority. I saw that one of its heads seemed to have a fatal wound but that this deadly injury had healed and, after that, the whole world had marvelled and followed the beast.

They prostrated themselves in front of the dragon because he had given the beast his authority; and they prostrated themselves in front of the beast, saying, 'Who can compare with the beast? How could anybody defeat him? For forty-two months the beast was allowed to mouth its boasts and blasphemies and to do whatever it wanted; and it mouthed its blasphemies against God, against his name, his heavenly Tent and all those who are sheltered there.

It was allowed to make war against the saints and conquer them, and given power over every race, people, language and nation; and all people of the world will worship it, that is, everybody whose name has not been written down since the foundation of the world in the book of life of the sacrificial Lamb.

If anyone has ears to hear, let him/her listen: Captivity for those who are destined for captivity; the sword for those who are to die by the sword. This is why the saints must have constancy and faith.

Cf. - Deuteronomy 6:13 - O. T. - You must fear Yahweh your God, you must serve him, by his name you must swear.

- Luke 4:9-13 - N. T. -

Then he led him to Jerusalem and made him stand on the parapet of the Temple. "If you are Son of God,' he said to him 'throw yourself down from here, for Sacred Scripture says: He will put his angels in charge of you to guard you, and again: They will hold you up on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone'. But Jesus answered him, 'It has been said: You must not put the Lord your God to the test'. Having exhausted all these ways of tempting him, the devil left him, to return at the appointed time.

Cf. - Psalms 91:10-12 - O. T. - No disaster can overtake you, no plague come near your tent: he will put you in his angels' charge to guard you wherever you go. They will support you on their hands in case you hurt your foot against a stone.

Cf. - Deuteronomy 6:16 - O. T. - Do not put Yahweh your God to the test as you tested him at Massah.

Cf. - Luke 22:3,53 -

Cf. - John 13:2,26-27 - N. T. - They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray him. 'Who is it, Lord?' 'It is the one' replied Jesus 'to whom I give the piece of bread that I shall dip in the dish. he dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot. At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you are going to do, do quickly'.

But they will not ask for his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as Sacred Scripture say: The footsteps of those who bring good news is a welcome sound.

Not everyone, of course, listens to the Good News. As prophet Isaiah says: Lord, how many believed what we proclaimed? So faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the word of Christ Jesus. [ 'Word of God' ] - Romans 10:11-17 -

How? And in what way, when it come to understanding matters: What I was always being told is: There are ways and preferences to comprehend all matters, whether it is of spirituality and unspirituality.

Firstly, in a literally manner: That is, used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.

Secondly, in a humanly manner: That is, from a human point of view, in a humanly manner, by human means; within ability; with human feeling or kindness.

Thirdly, in a spiritually manner: That is, in a way that relates to or affects the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

Finally, in an unspiritual manner: That is, not spiritual. But secular and worldly.

Jesus is baptised - Luke 3:21-22 - N. T. -

Now when all the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptism was at prayer, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily shape, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on you'.

Cf. - Matthew 3:13-17 - N. T. - Then Jesus appeared: he came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptised by John. John the Baptist tried to dissuade him. 'It is I who need baptism from you' he said 'and yet you come to me!' But Jesus replied, 'Leave it like this for the time being; it is fitting that we should, in this way, do all that righteousness demands'. At this, John gave in to him.

As soon as Jesus was baptised he came up from the water, and suddenly the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming down on him. And a voice spoke from heaven, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; my favour rests on him'.

Cf. - Luke 5:16; 6:12 -

Cf. - John 1:29-34 - N. T. - The next day, seeing Jesus coming towards him, John said, 'Look, there is the lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world. This is the one I spoke of when I said: A man is coming after me who ranks before me because he existed before me. I did not know him myself, and yet it was to reveal him to Israel that I came baptising with water.' John also declared, 'I saw the Spirit coming down on him from heaven like a dove and resting on him. I do not know myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one is going to be baptise with the Holy Spirit". Yes, I have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.'

HE WILL GLORIFY ME, SINCE ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. EVERYTHING THE FATHER HAS IS MINE; THAT IS WHY I SAID: ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. - JOHN 16:12-15 -

II. PRELUDE  TO  THE  PUBLIC  MINISTRY  OF  JESUS

The preaching of John the Baptist - Luke 3:1-6 - N. T. -

In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herod tetrarch of the lands of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, during the pontificate of Annas and Caiphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. He went through the whole Jordan district proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the sayings of the prophet Isaiah: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley will be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, winding ways will be straightened and rough roads made smooth. And all mankind shall see the salvation of God.

Cf. - Matthew 3:1-12; Mark 1:1-8 - N. T. -

In due course John the Baptist appeared; he preached in the wilderness of Judaea and this was his message: 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand'. This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said: A voice cries in the wilderness: prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locust and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.

But when he saw a number of Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism he said to them, Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming? But if you are repentant, produce the appropriate fruit, and do not presume to tell yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father", because I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones. Even now the axe laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire.

I baptise you in water for repentance, but the one who follows me is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to carry his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fan is in his hand; he will clear his threshing-floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that will never go out.'

Cf. - Matthew 27:2 - N. T. -  They had him bound, and led him away to hand him over to Pilate, the governor.

Cf. - Jeremiah 1:2 - O. T. - The words of Jeremiah son of Hilkiah, of a priestly family living at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. The word of Yahweh was addressed to him in the days of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

Cf. - Hosea 1:1 - O. T. - The word of Yahweh that was addressed to Hosea son of Beeri when Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah were reigning in Judah, and Jeroboam son of Joash in Israel.

Cf. - Luke 1:80 -

Cf. - John 1:23 - N. T. - What have you to say about yourself? So John said, 'I am, as Isaiah prophesied: A voice that cries in the wilderness: make a straight way for the Lord.'

Cf. - Isaiah 40:3-5 - O. T. - A voice cries, 'Prepare in the wilderness a way for Yahweh. Make a straight highway for our God across the desert. Let every valley be filled in, every mountain and hill be laid low, let every cliff become a plain, and the ridges a valley; then the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed and all mankind shall see it; for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.

- Luke 3:7-9 - N. T. -
He said, therefore, to to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you to fly from the retribution that is coming? But if you are repentant, produce the appropriate fruits, and do not think of telling yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father" because I tell you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones. Yes, even now the axe is laid to the roots of the trees, so that any tree which fails to produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown on the fire.'

Cf. - Acts 26:19-20 - N. T. - After that, king Agrippa, I could not disobey the heavenly vision. On the contrary I started preaching, first to the people of Damascus, then to those of Jerusalem and all the countryside of Judaea, and also to the pagans, urging them to repent and turn to God, proving their change of heart by their deeds.

- Luke 3:10-14 - N. T. -

When all the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?' he answered, 'if anyone has two tunics he must share with the man who has none, and the one with something to eat must do the same'. There were tax collectors too who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must we do?' He said to them, 'Exact no more than your rate'. Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'No intimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'

Cf. - Acts 2:37 - N. T. - Hearing this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the apostles, 'What must we do, brothers?'

Cf. - Luke 12:33-34 -

Cf. - Matthew 5:46-48 - O. T. - For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit? Even the tax collectors do as much, do they not? And if you save your greetings for your brothers/sisters, are you doing anything exceptional? Even the pagans do as much, do they not? You must therefore be perfect just as your heavenly Father is perfect.

- Luke 3:15-18 - N. T. -

A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to think that John might be Christ, so John declared before them all, 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fan is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; but the chaff he will burn in a fire that never go out.' As well as this, there were many other things he said to exhort the people and to announce the Good News to them.

Cf. - John 1:19-20 - N. T. - This is how John the Baptist appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, 'Who are you?' he not only declared, but he declared quite openly, 'I am not the Christ'.

Cf. - John 3:28 - N. T. - You, yourselves can bear me out: I said: I myself am not the Christ; I am the one who has been sent in front of him.

Cf. - John 1:26-27,33-34 - N. T. - 'Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the prophet?' John replied, 'I baptise with water; but there stands among you - unknown to you - the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo his sandal-strap'. I did not know him myself, but he who sent me to baptise with water had said to me, "The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and rest is the one who is going to baptise with the Holy Spirit". Yes, i have seen and I am the witness that he is the Chosen One of God.

Cf. - Acts 1:5 - N. T. - 'It is' he had said 'what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'

John the Baptist imprisoned - Luke 3:19-20 - N. T. -

But Herod the tetarch, whom he criticised for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for all the other crimes Herod had committed, added a further crime to all the rest by shutting John up in prison.

Cf. - Matthew 14:3-12; Mark 6:17-29 - N. T. - Now it was Herod who had arrested John, chained him up and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. For John had told him, 'It is against the Law for you to have her'. He had wanted to kill him but was afraid of the people, who regarded John as a prophet. Then, during the celebrations for Herod's birthday, the daughter of the Herodias danced before the company, and so delighted Herod that he promised on oath to give her anything she asked. Prompted by her mother she said, 'Give me John the Baptist's head, here, on a dish'. The king was distressed but, thinking of the oaths he had sworn and of his guests, he ordered it to be given her, and sent and had John beheaded in the prison. The head was brought in on a dish and given to the girl who took it to her mother. John's disciples came and took the body and buried it; then they went off to tell Jesus.

Cf. - John 3:24 - N. T. - This was before John the Baptist had been put in prison.
