The fraud of Ananias and Sapphira - Acts 5:1-11 - N. T. -

There was another man, however, called Ananias. He and his wife, Sapphira, agreed to sell a property; but with his wife's connivance he kept back part of the proceeds, and brought the rest and presented it to the apostles. 'Ananias,' Peter said 'how can Satan have so possessed you that you should lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the money from the land? While you still owned the land, wasn't it yours to keep, and after you had sold it wasn't the money yours to do with as you liked? What put this scheme into your mind? It is not to men that you have lied, but to God.

When he heard this Ananias fell down dead. This made a profound impression on everyone present. The younger men got up, wrapped the body in a sheet, carried it out and buried it.

About three hours later his wife came in, not knowing what had taken place. Peter challenged her, 'Tell me, was this the price you sold the land for?' 'Yes,' she said 'that was the price.' Peter then said, 'So your husband have agreed to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test! What made you do it? You hear those footsteps? They have just been to bury your husband; they will carry you out, too.' Instantly she dropped dead at his feet. When the young men came in they found she was dead, and they carried her out and buried her by the side of her husband. This made a profound impression on the whole Church and on all who heard it.

Cf. - Joshua 7:1-26 - O. T. - The ban defied. The sacrilege punished by a repulse at Ai. Joshua's prayer. Yahweh's answer. The culprit brought to light and punished. ....... Joshua said, 'Why did you bring evil on us? May Yahweh bring evil on you today!' And all Israel stoned him. A great cairn was reared over him, which is still there today. Then Yahweh ceased from his burning anger. It was then that the place was given the name, the Vale of Achor, which it is still called now.

Cf. - Luke 22:3 - N. T. - The Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve.

Cf. - John 13:2,27 - N. T. - They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray Jesus.

Cf. - Deuteronomy 23:22-24 - O. T. - If you make a vow to Yahweh your God, you must not be lazy in keeping it; be sure that Yahweh your God requires it, and to with-hold it would be a sin. But if you had refrained from making a vow, there would be no sin for you. Whatever passes your lips you must keep to, and the vow that you have freely made with your own mouth to Yahweh your God must be fulfilled.

Cf. - Acts 3:10+,2:14+ -

Cf. - Numbers 21:5-8- O. T. - They spoke against God and against Moses. 'Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in this wilderness? For there is neither bread nor water here; we are sick of this unsatisfying food.' At this God sent fiery serpents among the people; their bite brought death to many Israel. The people came and said to Moses, 'We have sinned by speaking against Yahweh and against you. Intercede for us with Yahweh to save us from these serpents.' Moses interceded for the people, and Yahweh answered him.

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 10:9; 11:30-32 - N. T. - We are not to put the Lord to the test: some of them did, and they were killed by snakes. In fact that is why many of you are weak and ill and some of you have died. If only we recollected ourselves, we should not be punished like that. But when the Lord does punish us like that, it is to correct us and stop us from being condemned with the world.

Cf. - Acts 20:28 -

Cf. - Luke 1:12+ - N. T. - The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear. But the angel said to him, 'Zechariah, do not be afraid, your prayer has been heard, Your wife Elizabeth is to bear you a son and you must name him John. He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord;...

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 1:2 - N. T. - Send greetings to the church of God in Corinth, to the holy people of Jesus Christ, who are called to take their place among all the saints everywhere who pray to our Lord Jesus Christ; for he is their Lord no less than ours.                                                                                                         -  PAGE  99  -

The early Christian community - Acts 4:32-35 - N. T. -

The whole group of believers was united, heart and soul; no one claimed for his own use anything that he had, as everything they owned was held in common. The apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus with great power, and they were all given great respect.

None of their members was ever in want, as all those who owned land or houses would sell them, and bring the money from them, to present it to the apostles; it was then distributed to any members who might be in need.

Cf. - Acts 2:42-47; 5:12-16 -

Cf. - John 17:11, 21 - N. T. - At the festival the Jews were on the look out for him: 'Where is he?' they said. Jesus answered, 'One work I did, and you all surprised by it.

Cf. - Philippians 1:27-28 - N. T. - Avoid anything in your everyday lives that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come to you and see for myself, or stay at a distance and only hear about you, I shall know that you are unanimous in meeting the attack with firm resistance, united by your love for the faith of the gospel and quite unshaken by your enemies. This would be the sure sign that they will lose and you will be saved.

=Acts 2:44-45; 1:8+; 4:30 -

Cf. - Deuteronomy 15:4-5 - O. T. - Let there be no poor among you then. Yahweh will bless you in the land Yahweh your God gives you for your inheritance only if you pay careful attention to the voice of Yahweh your God, keeping and observing all these commandments that I enjoin on you today.

Cf. - Luke 12:33-34 - N. T. - Sell your possessions and give alms. Get yourselves purses that do not wear out, treasure that will not fail you, in heaven where no thief can reach it and no moth destroy it. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Cf. - Acts 2:44-45 -

The generosity of Barnabas - Acts 4:36-37 - N. T. -

There was a Levite of Cypriot origin called Joseph whom the apostles surnamed Barnabas (which means 'son of encouragement'). He owned a piece of land and he sold it and brought the money, and presented it to the apostles.

Cf. - Acts 11:22; 13:1 -

1 Corinthians 9:6-7 - N. T. - Are Barnabas and I the only ones who are not allowed to stop working? Nobody ever paid money to stay in the army, and nobody ever planted a vineyard and refused to eat the fruit of it. Who has there ever been that kept a flock and did not feed on the milk from his flock?

Cf. - Galatians 2:1-2 - N. T. - It was not till fourteen years had passed that I [Paul] went up to Jerusalem again. I went with Barnabas and took Titus with me. I went there as the result of a revelation, and privately I laid before the leading men the Good News as I proclaim it among the pagans; I did so for fear the course I was adopting or had already adopted would not be allowed.                                                                          -  PAGE  98  -

The apostles' prayer under persecution - Acts 4:23-31 - N. T. -

As soon as they were released they went to the community and told them everything the chief priests and elders had said to them. When they heard it they lifted up their voice to God all together. 'Master,' prayed 'it is you who made heaven and earth and sea, and everything in them; you it is who said through the Holy Spirit and speaking through our ancestor David, your servant.

Why this arrogance among the nations, these futile plots among the peoples? Kings on earth setting out to war, princes making an alliance, against his Anointed.

'This is what has come true: in this very city Herod and Pontius Pilate made an alliance with the pagan nations and the peoples of Israel, against your holy servant Jesus whom you anointed, but only to bring about the very thing that you in your strength and in your wisdom had predetermined should happen. And now, Lord, take note of their threats and help your servants to proclaim your message with all boldness, by stretching out your hand to heal and to work miracles and marvels through the name of your holy servant Jesus.'

As they prayed, the house where they were assembled rocked; they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to proclaim the word of God boldly.

Cf. - Acts 14:15+ -

Cf. - Psalm 2:1-3 - O. T. - Why this uproar among nations? Why this impotent muttering of pagans - kings on earth rising in revolt, princes plotting against Yahweh and his Anointed, 'Now let us break their fetters! Now let us throw off their yoke!'

Cf. - Matthew 26:3-4 - N. T. - Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and made plans to arrest Jesus by some tricks and have him put to death.

Cf. - Luke 23:10-12 - N. T. - Meanwhile the chief priests and the scribes were there, violently pressing their accusations. Then Herod, together with his guards, treated Jesus with contempt and made fun of him; he put a rich cloak on him and sent him back to Pilate. And though Herod and Pilate had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day.

Cf. - Acts 3:13+; 10:38; 2:23+; 18:9-10; 28:31 -

Cf. - Ephesians 6:19 - N. T. - Never get tired of staying awake to pray for all the saints; and pray for me to be given an opportunity to open my mouth and speak without fear and give out the mystery of the gospel of which I am an ambassador in chains; pray that in proclaiming it I may speak as boldly as I ought to.
