Zacchaeus - Luke 19:1-10 - N. T. -

Jesus entered Jericho and was going through the town when a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He was anxious to see what kind of man Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd; so he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to catch a glimpse of Jesus who was to pass that way.

When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him: 'Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I must stay at your house today.' And he hurried down and welcomed Jesus joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. 'He has gone to stay at a sinner's house' they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, 'Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount'. And Jesus said to him, 'Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of Man has come to seek out and save what was lost'.

Cf. - Matthew 5:46 - N. T. - For if you love those who love you, what right have you to claim any credit?

Cf. - Luke 1:14+, 5:30, 15:2, 12:33+ -

Cf. - Exodus 21:37 - O. T. - If a man steals an ox or a sheep and then slaughter or sells it, he must pay five oxen for the ox, four sheep for the sheep.

Cf. - 2 Samuel 12:6 - O. T. - He must make fourfold restitution for the lamb, for doing such a thing and showing no compassion.

Cf. - Matthew 21:31 - N. T. - Which of the two did the father's will? 'The first' they said. Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, tax collectors and prostitutes are making their way into the kingdom of God before you.

Cf. - Matthew 15:6,9,24,32 - N. T. - Anything I have that I might have used to help you is dedicated to God. The worship they offer me is worthless; the doctrines they teach are only human regulations. Jesus said in reply, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. But Jesus called his disciples to him and said, 'I feel sorry for all these people; they have been with me for three days now and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them off hungry, they might collapse on the way.'                                                                                                                                                                 -  PAGE  60  -

When Sacred Scripture says: those who believe in him will have no cause for shame, it makes no distinction between Jew and Greek: all belong to the same Lord, Jesus Christ, who is rich enough, however many ask his help, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

But they will not ask for his help unless they believe in him, and they will not believe in him unless they heard of him, and they will not hear of him unless they get a preacher, and they will never have a preacher unless one is sent, but as Sacred Scripture say: The footsteps of those who bring good news is a welcome sound.

Not everyone, of course, listens to the Good News. As prophet Isaiah says: Lord, how many believed what we proclaimed? So faith comes from what is preached, and what is preached comes from the word of Christ Jesus. [ 'Word of God' ] - Romans 10:11-17 -

IF WE LIVE BY THE TRUTH AND IN LOVE, WE SHALL GROW IN ALL WAYS INTO CHRIST JESUS, WHO IS THE HEAD BY WHOM THE WHOLE BODY IS FITTED AND JOINED TOGETHER, EVERY JOINT ADDING ITS OWN STRENGTH, FOR EACH SEPARATE PART TO WORK ACCORDING TO IT FUNCTION. SO THE BODY GROWS UNTIL IT HAS BUILT ITSELF UP, IN LOVE." - EPHESIANS 4:15-16 -

Just as God originally inspired the Sacred Scripture/Holy Bible, He has used this means to preserve His Word for future generations. But behind the writing lay periods of time when these messages were circulated in spoken form. [Oral Tradition] The stories of the patriarchs were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth before they were written. [Written Tradition] The messages of the prophets were delivered orally before they were fixed in writing. Narratives of the life and ministry of Christ Jesus were repeated orally for two or three decades before they were given written form.

The reward of renunciation - Luke 18:28-30 - N. T. -

Then Peter said, 'What about us? We left all we had to follow you.' Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, there is no one who has left house, wife, brothers, parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God who will not be given repayment many times over in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life'.

Cf. - Matthew 19:27-29 - N. T. - Then Peter spoke. 'What about us?' he said to Jesus 'We have left everything and followed you. What are we to have, then?' Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, when all is made new and the Son of Man sits on his throne of glory, you will yourselves sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children or land for the sake of my name will be repaid a hundred times over, and also inherit eternal life.

Cf. - Mark 10:28-30 - N. T. - Peter took this up. 'What about us?' He asked Jesus. 'We have left everything and followed you.' Jesus said, 'I tell solemnly, there is no one who has left house, brothers, sisters, father, children or land for my sake and for the sake of the gospel who will not repaid a hundred times over, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and land - not without persecutions - now in this present time and, in the world to come, eternal life.

Cf. - Luke 14:26+ -

Third prophecy of the Passion - Luke 18:31-34 - N. T. -

Then taking the Twelve aside Jesus said to them, 'Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man is to come true. For he will be handed over to the pagans and will be mocked, maltreated and spat on, and when they have scourged him they will put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.' But they could make nothing of this; what Jesus said was quite obscure to them, they had no idea what it meant.

Cf. - Matthew 20:17-19; Mark 10:28-30 - N. T. - Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and on the way he took the Twelve to one side and said to them, 'Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man is about to be handed over to the chief priests and scribes. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the pagans to be mocked and scourged and crucified; and on the third day he will rise again.

Cf. - Luke 9:22+, 24:25, 2:38+, 9:51+

Cf. - Acts 3:17-18 - N. T. - Now I know, brothers, that neither you nor your leaders had any idea what you were really doing; this was the way God carried out what he had foretold, when he said through his prophets that his Christ would suffer.

Cf. - Mark 4:13-14 - N. T. - Jesus said to them, Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables?

Entering Jericho: the blind man - Luke 18:35-43 - N. T. -

Now as Jesus drew near to Jericho there was a blind man sitting at the side of the road begging. When he heard the crowd going past he asked what it was all about, and they told him that Jesus the Nazarene was passing by. So he called out, 'Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me'. The people in front scolded him and told him to keep quiet, but he shouted all the louder, 'Son of David, have pity on me'. Jesus stopped and ordered them to bring the man to him, and when he came up, asked him, 'What do you want me to do for you?' 'Sir,' he replied 'let me see again.' Jesus said to him, 'Receive your sight. Your faith has saved you.' And instantly his sight returned and he followed him praising God, and all the people who saw it gave praise to God for what had happened.

Cf. - Matthew 20:29-34; Mark 10:46-52 - N. T. - As they left Jericho a large crowd followed Jesus. Now there were two blind men sitting at the side of the road. When they heard that it was Jesus who was passing by, they shouted, 'Lord! have pity on us, Son of David.' And the crowd scolded them and told them to keep quiet, but they only shouted more loudly, 'Lord! Have pity on us, Son of David.' Jesus stopped, called them over and said, 'What do you want me to do for you?' They said to Jesus, 'Lord, let us have our sight back'. Jesus felt pity for them and touched their eyes, and immediately their sight returned and they followed him.

Cf. - Matthew 2:23 - N. T. - There Jesus settled in a town called Nazareth. In this way the words spoken through the prophets were to be fulfilled: He will be called a Nazarene.

Cf. - Matthew 8:10+; Luke 2:20 - N. T. - And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; it was exactly as they had been told.                                                                                                            -  PAGE  59  -

"Everyone who comes to Me and listens to My words and acts on them - I will show you what he/she is like. He is like a man who when he built his house dug, and dug deep, and laid the foundations on rock; when the river was in flood it bore down on that house but could not shake it, it was so well built.

But the one who listens and does nothing is like the man who built his house on soil, with no foundations: as soon as the river bore down on it, it collapsed; and what a ruin that house became!" - Luke 6:46-49 -

Jesus and the children - Luke 18:15-17 - N. T. -

People even brought little children to Jesus, for him to touch them; but when the disciples saw this they turned them away. But Jesus called the children to him and said, 'Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.'

Cf. - Luke 9:47 -

Cf. - Matthew 19:13-15; Mark 10:13-16 - N. T. - People were bringing children to Jesus, for him to touch them. The disciples turned them away, but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it. Then he put his arms round them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing.

Cf. - Matthew 18:1-4 - N. T. - At this time the disciples came to Jesus and said, 'Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?' So Jesus called a little child to him and set the child in front of them. Then he said, 'I tell you solemnly, unless you change and become like little children you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. And so, the one who makes himself as little as this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

The rich aristocrat - Luke 18:18-23 - N. T. -

A member of one of the leading families put this question to Jesus, 'Good Master, what have I to do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You must not commit adultery; You must not kill; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness; Honour your father and mother, and: you must love your neighbour as yourself.' He replied, 'I have kept all these from my earliest days till now'. And when Jesus heard this he said, 'There is still one thing you lack. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' But when he heard this he was filled with sadness, for he was very rich.

Cf. - Matthew 19:16-22; Mark 10:17-22 - N. T. -  Jesus was setting out a journey when a man....... 'Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: You must not commit adultery; You must not kill; You must not steal; You must not bring false witness; Honour your father and mother, and: you must love your neighbour as yourself.' He replied, 'I have kept all these from my earliest days till now'. And when Jesus heard this he said, 'There is still one thing you lack. Sell all that you own and distribute the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.' But his face fell at these words and he went away sad, for he was a man of great wealth.

Cf. - Luke 17:22; 10:25-28 -

Cf. - Exodus 20:12-16; Deuteronomy 5:16-20 - O. T. - Honour your father and mother so that you may have a long life in the land that Yahweh your God has given to you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.

Cf. - Luke 12:33+ -

The danger of riches - Luke 18:24-27 - N. T. -

Jesus looked at him and said, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to make their way into the kingdom of God! Yes, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' 'In that case' said the listeners 'who can be saved?' 'Things that are impossible for men' Jesus replied 'are possible for God.'

Cf. - Matthew 19:23-26; Mark 10:23-27 - N. T. - Jesus looked round and said to his disciples, 'How hard it is for those who have riches to enter the kingdom of God!' the disciples were astounded by these words, but Jesus insisted, 'My children,' he said to them 'how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.' They were more astonished than ever. 'In that case' they said to one another 'who can be saved?' Jesus gazed at them. 'For men' he said 'it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is possible for God.'                                                        -  PAGE  58  -
