The ascension - Luke 24:50-53 - N. T. -

Then Jesus took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. Now as Jesus blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven. They worshipped Jesus and then went back to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were continually in the Temple praising God.

Cf. Mark 16:19-20 - N. T. - And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven: there at the right hand of God he took his place, while they, going out, preached everywhere, the Lord Jesus Christ working with them and confirming the word by the signs that accompanied it.

Cf. - Acts 1:9-12 - N. T. - As Jesus said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them and they said, 'Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.'

Cf. - Luke 9:51-56 - N. T. - Now as the time drew near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparation for Jesus, but the people would not receive him because Jesus was making for Jerusalem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up?' But Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

Cf. - Luke 1:14-17 - N. T. - John the Baptist will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth, for he will be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink. Even from his mother's womb he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and he will bring back many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God. With the spirit and power of Elijah, John the Baptist will go before him to turn the hearts of fathers towards their children and the disobedient back to the wisdom that the virtuous have, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.

Cf. - Luke 2:20-35 - N. T. - And the shepherds went back glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen; it was exactly as they had been told. When the eighth day came and the child was to be circumcised, they gave him the name Jesus, the name the angel had given him before his conception.

And when the day came for them to be purified as laid down by the law of Moses, they took Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord - observing what stands written in the Law of the Lord: Every first-born male must be consecrated to the Lord - and also to offer in sacrifice, in accordance with what is said in the Law of the Lord, a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons. Now in Jerusalem there was a man named Simeon. He was an upright and devout man; he looked forward to Israel's comforting and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had set eyes on the Christ of the Lord. Prompted by the Spirit he came to the Temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the Law required, Simeon took him into his arms and blessed God; and he said:

'Now, Master, you can let your servant go in peace, just as you promised; because my eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared for all the nations to see, a light to enlighten the pagans and the glory of your people Israel'.

As the child's father and mother stood there wondering at the things that were being said about Jesus, Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'You see this child: he is destined for the fall and for the rising of many Israel, destined to be a sign that is rejected - and a sword will pierce your own soul too - so that the secret thoughts of many may be laid bare'.     -  PAGE  84  -

 Last instructions to the apostles - Luke 24:44-49 - N. T. -

Then Jesus told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, has to be fulfilled'. Jesus then opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, 'So you see how it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses to this.

'And now I am sending down to you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city then, until you are clothed with power from on high.'

Cf. - Luke 9:22+, 24:25-27 -

Cf. - Mark 4:13-14 - N. T. - Jesus said to them, 'Do you not understand this parable? Then how will you understand any of the parables?'

Cf. - Acts 10:40-47 - N. T. - Yet three days afterwards God raised Jesus to life and allowed him to be seen, not by the whole people but only by certain witnesses God had chosen beforehand. Now we are those witnesses - we have eaten and drunk with him after his resurrection from the dead - and he has ordered us to proclaim this to his people and to tell them that God has appointed Jesus to judge everyone, alive or dead. It is to him that all the prophets bear this witness: that all who believe in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.

While Peter was still speaking the Holy Spirit came down on all the listeners. Jewish believers who had accompanied Peter were all astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit should be poured out on the pagans too, since they could hear them speaking strange languages and proclaiming the greatness of God. Peter himself then said, 'Could anyone refuse the water of baptism to these people, now they have received the Holy Spirit just as much as we have?'

Cf. - Luke 2:38+ -

Cf. - Matthew 3:2-6, 28:16-20 - N. T. - 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand'. This was the man the prophet Isaiah spoke of when he said: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight. This man John wore a garment made of camel-hair with a leather belt round his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judaea and the whole Jordan district made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins.

Meanwhile the eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before Jesus, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them.

Jesus said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.'

Cf. - Mark 16:15-16 - N. T. - Jesus said to them, 'Go out to the whole world; proclaim the Good News to all creation. He/She who believes and is baptised will be saved; he/she who does not believe will be condemned.

Cf. - Acts 1:8-11, 1:4-5 - You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and then you will be my witnesses not only in Jerusalem but throughout Judaea and Samaria, and indeed to the ends of the earth. As Jesus said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight. They were still staring into the sky when suddenly two men in white were standing near them, and they said, 'Why are you men from Galilee standing here looking into the sky? Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven, this same Jesus will come back in the same way as you have seen him go there.'

When Jesus had been at table with them, he had told them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for what the Father had promised. 'It is' Jesus had said 'what you have heard me speak about: John baptised with water but you, not many days from now, will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.'

Jesus appears to the apostles - Luke 24:36-43 - N. T. -

They were still talking about all this when Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you!' In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost. But Jesus said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Look at my hands and feet; yes, it is I indeed. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has no flesh and bones as you can see I have.' And as Jesus said this he showed them his hands and feet. Their joy was so great that they still could not believe it, and they stood there dumbfounded; so Jesus said to them, 'Have you anything here to eat?' And they offered him a piece of grilled fish, which he took and ate before their eyes.

Cf. - John 20:19-23 - N. T. - In the evening of that same day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. Jesus said to them, 'Peace be with you', and showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord, and Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you.' 'As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.' After saying this he breathed on them and said: 'Received the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.'

Cf. - Luke 1:12+, 24:16+ -

Cf. - 1 John 1:1 - N. T. - Something which has existed since the beginning, that we have heard, and we have seen with our own eyes; that we have watched and touched with our hands: the Word, who is life - this is our subject.

Cf. - Luke 1:14+ -

Cf. - Matthew 8:10 - N. T. - When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, 'I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this.

Cf. - Tobit 12:19-20 - O. T. - You thought you saw me eating, but that was an appearance and no more. Now bless the Lord on earth and give thanks to God. I am about to return to Him above who sent me.

Cf. - John 21:5-6; 21:9-14 - N. T. - Jesus called out, 'Have you caught anything, friends?' And they answered, 'No', Jesus said, 'Throw the net out to starboard and you'll find something'. So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking in it. Jesus said, 'Bring some of the fish you have just caught'. Simon Peter went abroad and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, 'Come and have breakfast'. None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, 'Who are you?'; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same time with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead.

The road to Emmaus - Luke 24:13-35 - N. T. -

That very same day, two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem, and they were talking together about all that had happened. Now as they talked this over, Jesus himself came up and walked by their side; but something prevented them from recognising him. Jesus said to them, 'What matters are you discussing as you walk along?' They stopped short, their faces downcast.

Then one of them, Cleopas, answered Jesus, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have been happening there these few days'. 'What things?' Jesus asked. 'All about Jesus of Nazareth' they answered 'who proved he was a great prophet by the things he said and did in the sight of God and of the whole people; and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had him crucified. Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not at all: two whole days have gone by since it all happened; and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning, and when they did not find the body, they came back to tell us they had seen a vision of angels who declared Jesus was alive. Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but of Jesus they saw nothing.'

Then Jesus said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe the full message of the prophets! Was it not ordained that the Christ should suffer and so enter into his glory? Then, starting with Moses and going through all the prophets, Jesus explained to them the passages throughout the scriptures that were about himself.

When they drew near to the village to which they were going, he made as if to go on; but they pressed him to stay with them. 'It is nearly evening' they said 'and the day is almost over.' So Jesus went in to stay with them. Now while he was with them at table, he took bread and said the blessing; then he broke it and handed it to them. And their eyes were opened and they recognised Jesus; but he had vanished from their sight. Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road and explained the scriptures to us?'

They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled together with their companions, who said to them, 'Yes, it is true. The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.' Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread.

Cf. - Mark 16:9-13 - N. T. - Having risen in the morning on the first day of the week, Jesus appeared first to Mary of Magdala from whom he had cast out seven devils. She then went to those who had been his companions, and who were mourning and in tears, and told them. But they did not believe her when they heard her say that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him. After this, Jesus showed himself under another form to two of them as they were on their way into the country. These went back and told the others, who did not believe them either. Lastly, Jesus showed himself to the Eleven themselves while they were at table.

Cf. - Luke 24:31 -

Cf. - John 20:14-20; 21:4-7 - N. T. - As Mary of Magdala said this she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not recognise him. Jesus said, 'Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?' Supposing him to be the gardener, she said, 'Sir, if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and remove him'. Jesus said, 'Mary!' She knew him then and said to him in Hebrew, 'Rabbuni!' - which means Master.

Jesus said to her, 'Do not cling to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go and find the brothers, and tell them: I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.' So Mary of Magdala went and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her.

In the evening of that same day, the first day of the week, the doors were closed in the room where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews. Jesus came and stood among them. He said to them, 'Peace be with you', and showed them his hands and his side.

Cf. - Luke 24:37 -

Cf. - Matthew 2:23, 16:14-18 - N. T. - There he settled in a town called Nazareth. In this way the words spoken through the prophets were to fulfilled: He will be called a Nazarene. 'Who do people say the Son of Man is?' And they said, 'Some say he is John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets'. 'But you,' Jesus said 'who do you say I am?' Then Simon Peter spoke up, 'You are the Christ,' he said 'the Son of the living God'. Jesus replied, 'Simon son of Jonah, you are a happy man! Because it was not flesh and blood that revealed this to you but my Father in heaven. So I now say to you: You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. And the gates of the underworld can never hold out against it.

Cf. - Acts 2:22, 7:22 - N. T. - Men of Israel, listen to what I am going to say: Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God by the miracles and portents and signs that God worked through him when he was among you, as you all know. So Moses was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians and became a man with power both in his speech and his actions.

Cf. - Luke 1:54,68; 2:38; 24:91 -

Cf. - Matthew 8:10-13; Mark 4:13+ - N. T. - When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him, 'I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this. And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven; but the subjects of the kingdom will be turned out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.' And to the centurion Jesus said, 'Go back, then; you have believed, so let this be done for you'. And the servant was cured at that moment.

Cf. - Luke 18:31+ -

Cf. - Acts 3:24; 9:22 - N. T. - In fact, all the prophets that have ever spoken, from Samuel onwards, have predicted these days. Saul's [Paul's] power increased steadily, and he was able to throw the Jewish colony at Damascus into complete confusion by the way he demonstrated that Jesus was the Christ.

Cf. - 1 Peter 1:11 - N. T. - The Spirit of Christ which was in them foretold the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would come after them, and they tried to find out at what time and in what circumstances all this was to be expected.

Cf. - Luke 16:29,31,24:16+ -

Cf. - Acts 8:38-39 - N. T. - The eunuch ordered the chariot to stop, then Philip and the eunuch both went down into the water and Philip baptised him. But after they had come up out of the water again Philip was taken away by the Spirit of the Lord, and the eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 - N. T. - Well then, in the first place, I taught you what I had been taught myself, namely that Christ died for our sins, in accordance with the scriptures; that Jesus was buried; and that he was raised to life on the third day, in accordance with the scriptures; that he appeared first to Cephas and secondly to the Twelve. Next Jesus appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died; then he appeared to James, and then to all the apostles; and at last of all he appeared to me too; it was as though I was born when no one expected it.
