Nowhere else in heaven, earth or hell, but only in ourselves lies the breakdown in our social work, character, hospitalization and schools. The arrows of our activism have to be winged with faith, sometimes with "prayer and fasting", otherwise our counseling, our dialogues, our workshops, sensitivity sessions and our talk fests are confusion worse confounded. Even if we speak in the name of Jesus, unless we speak it with the power that comes from being on our knees, the devils will say to us; "Jesus, I acknowledge, and I know about Paul, but who are you?" - Acts 19:15 -

We may fancy ourselves really caring for people, while casting barbs at those who do not, and yet not know we are without real power. Samson said, "I will go out as usual and shake myself; he did not know that the Lord had left him". - Judges 16:21 - How much of all the busy things we do without prayer will be found in His hand on the day of judgment? How much wheat for the barn of eternity? How much chaff for the fire? It is not beyond the impossible that even our works could be our most dangerous enemy to our life hidden with Christ in God. If our work is to be worthy, it will be because we look into His Face; if it is to be deep, it must never be separated from service.

This is the lesson of the Transfiguration. All the beautiful privileges of our vocation are for seeing Christ in the suffering world. We priests cannot live only on the mountain; we cannot live forever in the valley. The two laws: love of God and love of neighbour are inseparable, and the word "neighbour" in the parable of the Good Samaritan is "one in need". The true victim=priest does not separate what God has joined together.

The Church does not come off too well in the Transfiguration scene. Then as now, priests may be divided: the three on the mountain wanting to live only for the Church and in the Church; the nine below wanting to help the world, but ineffective because they had little faith. The first group were parochial to the exclusion of the social; the second group were committed, but with little prayer.

The first group started with Christ, but did not end in the world; the second group started with the world but lost contact with Christ. These two attitudes at the Transfiguration continue into this hour in the Church; but it is always one that could be avoided if we went from the Head, Christ, to His Body, the Church, and through both to the world which God so loved that he sent His Son into an underground birthplace to shake the world to its very foundations.

The Vatican Council mentions the two extremes of isolation from earthly responsibilities and absorption in them. "They are mistaken who, knowing that we have here no abiding city, but seek one which is to come, think that they therefore may shirk their earthly responsibilities... Nor... are they any less wide of the mark who think that religion consists in acts of worship alone and in the discharge of certain moral obligations, and who imagine they can plunge themselves into earthly affairs in such a way as to imply that these are altogether divorced from the religious life.

As the Lord and the three came down the mountain, out of the crowd comes a father who tells the Lord that from childhood his demon-possessed boy had tried countless times to commit suicide "by throwing himself into fire and water". - Mark 9:22 - Here was symbolized the world which the Church after its vision of Jesus, must serve. Raphael's masterpiece of the Transfiguration properly shows both together - the mountain of glory and the pain-infected valley.

The Lord kept both together, for the mountain without the valley is selfishness, and the valley without the mountain is drudgery and bitterness. the reason why so many religious and priests who give primacy to the valley have not kept their zeal in service is because they took their eye off the vision of "Jesus only". Real strength for man's body and soul must be drawn from God.

Now we come to another aspect of the Church in this problem of its relation to the world. During the vision of Glory, Peter as the spokesman for the three wanted the exaltation of feeling without the exaltation of the Cross. But down below was another segment of the Church represented by the nine apostles and the disciples. They are the activists. They were not on the mountain of vision, but they were involved below. they had commitments to the social order. But they were ineffective. The Lord had once given them power to drive out devils; later on they returned saying that the devils were subject to His Name. - Matt. 7:22; Mark 6:13; Luke 9:11 -

As soon as the father sees Our Lord he reports: "I brought him to your disciples, but they could not cure him". - Matt. 17:16 - The curious buzz of the crowd about the disciples which saw the exorcisms die half-spoken on the lips, made them yearn for the return of their Master. As as soon He saw them, they immediately went to Him to find out why they had not been successful: they loved the poor, they wanted to help the afflicted, but why were they powerless?

And the activists get the answer from the last place in the world they expected it: from within their own hearts. The power had not been withdrawn. Priests were priests, bishops were bishops. But why then failure in the outreach of the Church to the secular world? The Lord let fly His answer, which has grief in every word: "What an unbelieving and perverse generation! How long shall I be with you? How long must I endure you?... Your faith is too small!" - Matt. 17:-18-20 -

You are active, but you are not contemplative. Subtly does unbelief creep into hearts even when we think we are acting in faith and using His name. Very likely because of Christ's absence, or their absence from Him, they had lost the gift they once possessed. The great primal wants of man still abide; racial justice, peace, food and shelter, but they can be given also by Communists. When Christ's own supply them, the invisible mystique of faith must be present.

Nowhere else in heaven, earth or hell, but only in ourselves lies........

He had taken with Him the three most capable of understanding His death and future glory. And they slept - Luke 9:32 - as they would do later in Gethsemane. On awakening they perceived the glory of Christ, as Peter is the first to speak: "Master, how good it is that we are here! Shall we make three shelters, one for You, one for Moses and one for Elijah?" - Luke 9:33 -

This is one of the reactions of the Church to the glory of the Priest-Victim. (The other will be at the foot of the mountain.) Peter wanted to make that glory permanent. Why bother going on preaching the Kingdom of God for it is now in its glory? What chance do the Romans have against such a glittering success? Why the nonsense about going to Jerusalem to be crucified?

Let us have a glorious Priesthood without that inglorious Victim-hood! No more pain! No more enemies! No more struggle! Moments come in the history of the Church where, like Peter, the Church wants glory - no penance, no combat, no more lashes under God's correcting Hands. Some followers of Christ want only raptures, but no more harassing details. It is the cry of drug addicts; the short trip, O Lord, not the long haul; an Easter without a Good Friday. Instant glory! Life is a long honeymoon! And these words about capturing glory without a Cross were spoken in the same scene where Our Lord discoursed on His death.

Of such talk about a Crossless Christ, a victim-less priesthood, the Gospel interestingly records: "But he [Peter] spoke without knowing what he was saying". - Luke 9:33 -

Now we come to the second term of the descent - first from Christ to the Church, and second from the Church to the world. Our Lord now takes them down the mountain: - Mark 9:9 - from the heights to the depths; from the ecstasy to the pain. The vision gives way to the valley. There is work to be done. On the top of the mountain they looked around; there was nobody to be seen but Jesus alone. - Mark 9:8 -

While mortality remains, the vision must fade, as Wordsworth reminds, "into the light of common day". First Communion, the day of profession, the hour of ordination - these are not chained to the spot. Disaster comes from any attempt to give permanence to the temporary. No use for married couples trying to recapture honeymoons, or to regain the thrill of a great experience in music or the sight of a beautiful face. It was God's love and harmony and beauty that shot through these moments, not the reality of the moment.

So the Lord takes them down into the valley where there is a demoniac son and a distraught father symbolizing all the ills to which human flesh is heir as well as all the social problems that tear at the heart of modern man. On the mountain, we see the Word; in the valley we see the Word made flesh. The place of spiritual privilege, such as before the tabernacle, is close to the place of suffering: the needs of mankind.

As the Lord and the three................

The tragedy of the Church is that so many of these zealous souls in earnest love of the world became secular in spirit. Having started with the world, they moved backward and used the Church as a whipping post, and Christ to justify any position they held. They used Jesus. He did not use them. Hence, countless pamphlets on "Jesus and Homosexuals", "Jesus and Amnesty", "Jesus and Sex", "Jesus and the Rebels", "Jesus and Revolution". Their commitment to Him becomes only skin deep because they "play it safe". In the rightful fervour for social dimension, the Christ-depth was lost.

This had a bad effect on those outside the Church who were admittedly men of good will. They found themselves pulled in two directions: grace pulled them to the very door of the Church where they yearned to confess their sins and stand at the foot of Calvary in the Mass. But then they looked to the pulpit where the priest who should be proclaiming Christ is discussing the plight of cities, rock music and sexual freedom, These searching souls, as a result, turned away from the Church, saying, "We can get that gospel in the world we want to leave, and get it with better grammar and less stultifying jargon".

The very ones who were right in begging the Church to be more concerned with the secular, thus became the very ones who drove some in the world away from the Church. Christianity began to appear insipid with hardly any trace left of the Spirit that cast fire upon the earth. Insensibly, the reproaches that were directed against the psychotics in the Church who refused to budge from their ways and the neurotics who wanted to speed over the precipice, become a criticism of Christianity itself.

The world does not point a finger at our weaknesses, it points it at our failure to use our strength; namely, to approach the world problems through Christ and though His Body, the Church, and not the other way around.

THE TRANSFIGURATION: CHRIST---CHURCH---WORLD

The Transfiguration of Our Lord is a perfect example of how religion is to be related to the world. First, there is Christ in the glory of His oneness with the Father; then there is the Church, represented by three disciples on the mountain and the nine disciples down below in the world struggling and helplessness.

The background of the Transfiguration is the inability of Christ to convince His priests that He was Priest-Victim. He had just come from Caesarea Philippi where Peter confessed His Divinity but denied the Cross, for which the Lord called him "Satan". That is always the business of Satan: anti-Cross.

As Jesus prays: His Face "shone like the sun". - Matt. 17:2; Luke 9:28 - His garments appeared radiant with light. His whole being was metamorphosed. The glory of the other world budded upon His Person,as He gave a preview of His Resurrection body. Moses and Elijah appear and He speaks to them about what? Of His Death! His Victim-hood! His Exodus! His Departure which He was to accomplish in Jerusalem! Jesus had been trying for a week to convince His disciples that He was a Priest Who offered Himself. They would not grasp it.

To convince them, He turns His back on the Arch of Triumph to take the route of the seed which dies in order to live again. And why? Because He loved men unto death. He did not remain in heavenly headquarters, but went into the battlefield; He would not leave it unless He could take them with Him. The Song of Songs tell us that love is stronger than death! Aye! Now love is stronger than heaven! He will remain with His own unto the end. The Transfiguration was the preparation for the Cross. now there is Moses and Elijah instead of the two thieves. And instead of the cry, "My God! My God! Why?" there is the approval of the Heavenly Father: "This is MY Son, My Chosen; listen to Him". - Luke 9:35 -

He had taken with Him the three most...............

The Lord never intended that the conversion to the world for the sake of bettering it, should be either at his expense or that of His Body which is the Church. No one has a true vocation who claims the world called him: "I became a priest to further good housing," or "I became a nun to share the lot of the sharecroppers."

The call to the religious life is thus turned upside down: WORLD --- CHURCH --- CHRIST

Once the world is assumed to be first to call, two effects generally follow: a criticism of the Church and a diminished love of Christ and the Cross by becoming anti-Christ. Peter Berger cuts with a keen blade this false idea that the Church and service to the world are incompatible:

One may begin by admiring Christians for their political involvements. But then one must also admire all the others, including the Black Muslims, the atheists, who share these involvements. If the political struggles have become the very reason for being a Christian in the first place, this reason will
lose some plausibility, the more one involves oneself in these struggles. If secular aims define the mission of the Church in society, the conclusion that the Church is finally unnecessary is inevitable, no matter how noble the secular aims may be.

The Church and the world are not mutually exclusive. Priests who have left the ministry because they wanted to serve the world, have emphasized unwittingly the point of vocation. They acknowledged that their priesthood needed a victimhood, but they interpreted victimhood solely in terms of service to the world, rather than also bearing the guilt and sin and poverty of the world in the Name of Christ. They were right in affirming that a cultic religion is insufficient; they were wrong in assuming that the only way to practice victimhood was to turn it into servanthood in the economic and political order.

The prophet Amos warned against those who were concerned only with the hunger of the world, while forgetting that there is a greater hunger for the Word of God. Young priests sensing too much stress on the ecclesiastical and too little on the social, began to move out of the sanctuary into the slums. This exodus in many was prompted by a high idealism and a grief at seeing the Church so little involved in the arena of politics and economics.

They knew that faith must not be kept within Church walls; that the Vatican Council bade the Church to be more concerned with the temporalities of the economic and social order; that some pastors dragged their feet against an authentic ecumenism; that the poverty from which so many in the world suffer has profound political and economic overtones; that when no one in the Church protests injustice, the world makes known its disgust with the Church; that many in the Church acted as if they domesticated God or cornered Him in parochial traps; that concern with humanity and its woes is to be defined sometimes are reactors rather than actors with regard to the tangled anti-culture mess of the day.

But when we start with the world and not with Christ, something goes wrong. Too often such souls end in worldliness. Then there has to be written in chancery records what Paul had to write about Demas: "Demas has deserted me because his heart was set on this world." - 2Tim. 4:10 -

The tragedy of the Church is................

Modern man has come to the conclusion that if God is to be found, he is to be found in the secular challenge of life. The Christian faith to him is no longer a guarantee of eternal salvation but a charter for human action. The choice is between revolution and grace, rebellion and religion; this means the abandonment of all philosophical principles which antedate social programmes.

Many priests and religious began an exodus, not from Egyptian thraldom, but from the sanctuary and the cloister. Whenever there is a defect in the Church there is always a danger of going to an extreme. This happens in all areas of life even in literature, where the classicism of Dryden produces the reaction of the romanticism of the Lake poets. Time is required to strike a balance between the teeter-totter of isolation from the world at one time and drowning in it at another.

The distance between spirituality and social action is not as great as many believe. Scripture does not reveal a spiritual man or a secular man. It speaks only of a whole man - integrated by the salvation that Christ brings. It is the incarnation that has to be worked out in the assumption of new human natures as the instruments of Christ's continuing salvation. God is indeed the source of all things, but all things have their fulfillment in Him. The keriosis or the humiliation of God in Christ is balanced by the pleroma or the filling up of all things in Him: "So may you attain the fullness of being, the fullness of God Himself". - Eph. 3:19 -

Every great deed done to a neighbour is done in a world in which Christ has already acted: touching the lepers, emptying food baskets, healing withered hands. Only when we align ourselves with Him do all our good deeds begin to work. Theology is not politics: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. So do not be swept off your course by all sorts of outlandish teaching". - Heb. 13:7-8 - John Mark is still a better guide than Harvey Cox. It is the actualization of Christ that differs from age to age. Unamuno had the correct vision:

Those who believe that they believe in God,
but without any passion in their heart,
without anguish of mind,... believe only in
the God-idea, not God Himself.

Because we are in the world but not of it, the priest or nun who would be truly effective in an apostolate in the world must have three conversions: TO CHRIST -------; TO CHURCH -------; TO WORLD

The world represents the last step in the descent; without the first two, there may be no claim to doing God's work.

TO CHRIST: "There is no salvation in anyone else at all, for there is no other name under heaven granted to men, by which we may receive salvation". - Acts: 4:12 -

TO THE CHURCH: The mutuality of response by those who are saved by the Blood of Christ form His Body: "In Him you too are being built with all the rest into a spiritual dwelling for God". - Eph. 2:22 - "For no one ever hated his own body; on the contrary, he provides and cares for it; and that is how Christ treats the Church, because it is His Body, of which we are living parts". - Eph. 5:29 -

TO THE WORLD: "Christ Himself the remedy for the defilement of our sins, not our sins only but the sins of the world". - 1John 2:2 -

The Lord never intended that the conversion to....................

The Jewish people expected the kingdom of God to bring the present evil age to an end. But it arrived mysteriously without doing so. The new reality of the kingdom overlapped the present age, invading it rather than bringing it to an end. The demons reflect this oddity when they ask Jesus,

They stood there shouting, 'What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the time?' - Matt. 8:29 -

The future kingdom will bring the present age to an end and usher in the perfect age promised in the true prophets. The present kingdom is both an anticipation and a guarantee of this future bliss.

The expression kingdom of God occurs mostly in the gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The Gospel of John and the epistles of the new Testament refer to the same reality but in different language, using phrases such as eternal life or salvation. The apostle Paul identified the kingdom of God as "righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit".

In short, you must not compromise your privilege, because the kingdom of God does not mean eating or drinking this or that, it means righteousness and peace and joy brought by the Holy Spirit. - Rom. 14:16-17 -

Perhaps one reason why he described this way is that the kingdom of God was a Jewish expression unfamiliar and possibly misleading to Gentiles. Some interpreters of the Sacred Scripture/Holy Bible have described the phrase kingdom of God as a more comprehensive term to both heaven and earth. Likewise, they believe kingdom of God is a more restricted term referring to God's rule on earth, especially in relation to the nation of Israel. In this view Jesus offered the literal kingdom of heaven to Israel, but the Jews refused to accept it. Thus, it has been postponed until the Second Coming of Christ.

A careful study of the gospels, however, shows that the two phrases are used interchangeably. In parallel passages, Matthew uses 'kingdom of heaven' while Mark and Luke has 'kingdom of God', where they are used one after the other in the same connection.
