Peter's denials - Luke 22:54-62 - N. T. -

They seized Jesus then and led him away, and they took him to the high priest's house. Peter followed at a distance. They had lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard and Peter sat down among them, and as he was sitting there by the blaze a servant-girl saw him, peered at him, and said, 'This person was with Jesus too'. But Peter denied it. 'Woman,' he said 'I do not know him.' Shortly afterwards someone else saw him and said, 'You are another of them'. But Peter replied, 'I am not, my friend'. About an hour later another man insisted, saying 'This fellow was certainly with Jesus. Why, he is a Galilean.' 'My friend,' said Peter 'I do not know what you are talking about.' At that instant, while he was still speaking, the cock crew, and the Lord turned and looked straight at Peter, and Peter remembered what the Lord had said to him, 'Before the cock crows today, you will have disowned me three times'. And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Cf. - Matthew 26:57, 69-75; Mark 14:66-72 - N. T. - The men who had arrested Jesus led him off to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. Meanwhile Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came up to him and said, 'You too were with Jesus the Galilean'. But Peter denied it in front of them all. 'I do not know what you are talking about' he said. When he went out to the gateway another servant-girl saw him and said to the people there, 'This man was with Jesus the Nazarene'.

And again, with an oath, Peter denied it. 'I do not know the man'. A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, 'You are one of them for sure! Why, your accent gives you away.' Then Peter started calling down curses on himself and swearing, 'I do not know the man'. At that moment the cock crew, and Peter remembered what Jesus had said, 'Before the cock crows you will have disowned me three times'. And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Cf. - John 18:15-18, 25-27 - N. T. - Simon Peter, with another disciple, followed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest's palace, but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who was keeping the door and brought Peter in. The maid on duty at the door said to Peter, 'Aren't you another of that man's disciples?' Peter answered, 'I am not'. Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with others.

As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him, 'Aren't you another of his disciples?' Peter denied it saying, 'I am not'. One of the high priest's servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, 'Didn't I see you in the garden with him?' Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crew.

Cf. - Luke 22:34 -

Jesus mocked by the guards - Luke 22:63-65 - N. T. -

Meanwhile the men guarded Jesus were mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him and questioned him. 'Play the prophet' they said. 'Who hit you then?' And they continued heaping insults on him.

Cf. - Matthew 26:67-68; Mark 14:65 - N. T. - Some of them started spitting at him and, blindfolding him, began hitting him with their fists and shouting. 'Play the prophet!' And the attendants rained blows on him.

The Mount of Olives - Luke 22:39-46 - N. T. -

Jesus then left to make his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, with the disciples following. When they reached the place Jesus said to them, 'Pray not to be put to test'. Then he withdrew from them, about a stone away, and knelt down and prayed. 'Father, he said 'if you are willing, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, let your will be done, not mine.' Then an angel appeared to Jesus, coming from heaven to give him strength. In his anguish he prayed even more earnestly, and his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

When Jesus rose from prayer he went to the disciples and found them sleeping for sheer grief. 'Why are you asleep?' he said to them. 'Get up and pray not to be put to the test.'

Cf. - Matthew 26:30, 36-46; Mark 14:26, 32-42  - N. T. - After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives. They came to a small estate called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray'. Then Jesus took Peter and James and John with him. And a sudden fear came over him, and great distress. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point of death. Wait here, and keep awake.' And going on a little further Jesus threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, this hour might pass him by. 'Abba (Father)!' he said 'Everything is possible for you. Take this cup away from me. But let it be as you, not I, would have it.'

Jesus came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Had you not the strength to keep awake one hour? You should be awake and praying not to be put to the test. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again Jesus went away and prayed, saying the same words. And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they could find no answer for him. Jesus came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on mow and take your rest. It is all over. The hour has come. Now the Son of Man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up! let us go! My betrayer is close at hand already.'

Cf. - Luke 21:37 -

Cf. - John 18:2-3 - N. T. - Judas the traitor knew the place well, since Jesus had often met his disciples there, and he brought the cohort to this place together with a detachment of guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees, all with lanterns and torches and weapons.

Cf. - Luke 3:21+ -

Cf. - John 12:27-30 - N. T. - Now my soul is troubled. What shall I say: Father, save me from this hour? But it was for this very reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name! A voice came from heaven, 'I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again'. People standing by, who heard this, said it was a clap of thunder; others said, 'It was an angel speaking to him'. Jesus answered, It was not for my sake that this voice came, but for yours.

Cf. -  Acts 21:14 - N. T. - And so, as he would not be persuaded, we gave up the attempts, saying, 'The Lord's will be done'.

The arrest - Luke 22:47-53 - N. T. -

Jesus was still speaking when a number of men appeared, and at the head of them the man called Judas, one of the Twelve, who went up to Jesus to kiss him. Jesus said, 'Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?' His followers, seeing what was happening, said, 'Lord, shall we use our swords?' And one of them struck out at the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. But at this Jesus spoke. 'Leave off!' he said 'That will do!' And touching the man's ear Jesus healed him.

Then Jesus spoke to the chief priests and captains of the Temple guard and elders who had come for him. 'Am I a brigand' he said 'that you had to set out with swords and clubs? When I was among you in the Temple day after day you never moved to lay hands on me. But this is your hour; this is the reign of darkness.'

Cf. - Matthew 26:47-56; Mark 14:43-50; John 18:3-11 - N. T. - Judas the traitor knew the place well, since Jesus had often met his disciples there, and he brought the cohort to this place together with a detachment of guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees, all with lanterns and torches and weapons. Knowing everything that was going to happen to him, Jesus then came forward and said, 'Who are you looking for?' They answered, 'Jesus the Nazarene'. Jesus said, 'I am he'. Now Judas the traitor was standing among them. When Jesus said, 'I am he', they moved back and fell to the ground. Jesus asked them a second time, 'Who are you looking for?' They said, 'Jesus the Nazarene'. 'I have told you that I am he' replied Jesus. 'If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.' This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, 'Not one of those you gave me have I lost'.

Simon Peter, who carried, a sword, drew it and wounded the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter, 'Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?'

Cf. - Acts 1:16 - N. T. - Brothers, the passage of scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit, speaking through David, foretells the fate of Judas, who offered himself as a guide to the men who arrested Jesus.

Cf. - Luke 19:47; 21:37; 4:13+ -

Cf. - John 8:12+  N. T. - When Jesus spoke to the people again, he said: 'I am the light of the world; anyone who follows me will not be walking in the dark; he/she will have the light of life'.

The reward promised to the apostles - Luke 22:28-30 - N. T. -

You are the men who have stood by me faithfully in my trails; and now I confer a kingdom on you, just as my Father conferred one on me: you will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel.

Cf. - John 6:66-69, 15:27 - N. T. - This is why I told you that no one could come to me unless the Father allows him. After this, many of his disciples left him and stopped going with him. Then Jesus said to the Twelve, 'What about you, do you want to go away too?' Simon Peter answered, 'Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.' And you too will be witnesses, because you have been with me from the outset.

Cf. - Revelation 2:25-29, 3:20-21 - N. T. - Hold firmly on to what you already have until I [Christ Jesus] come. To those who prove victorious, and keep working for me until the end, I will give the authority over the pagans which I myself have been given by my Father, to rule them with an iron sceptre and shatter them like earthenware. And I will give him/her the Morning Star. If anyone has ear to hear, let him/her listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Look, I am standing at the door, knocking. If one of you hears me calling and opens the door, I will come in to share his/her meal, side by side with him/her. Those who prove victorious I will allow to share my throne, just as I was victorious myself and took my place with my Father in this throne.

Cf. - Matthew 19:28-30 - N. T. - Jesus said to Peter, 'I tell you solemnly, when all is made new and the Son of Man sits on his throne of glory, you will yourselves sit on twelve thrones to judge the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses, brothers, sisters, father, mother, children or land for the sake of my name will be repaid a hundred times over, and also inherit eternal life. Many who are first will be last, and the last, first.

Peter's denial and repentance foretold - Luke 22:31-34 - N. T. -

'Simon, Simon! Satan, you must know, has got his wish to sift you all like wheat; but I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail, and once you have recovered, you in your turn must strengthen your brothers.' 'Lord,' he answered 'I would be ready to go to prison with you, and to death.' Jesus replied, 'I tell you, Peter, by the time the cock crows today you will have denied three times that you know me'.

Cf. - Revelation 2:10 - N. T. - Do not be afraid of the sufferings that are coming to you: I tell you, the devil is going to send some of you to prison to test you, and you must face an ordeal for ten days. Even if you have to die, keep faithful, and I will give you the crown of life for your prize.

Cf. - Matthew 16:19 - N. T. - I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven: whatever you bind on earth shall be considered bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth shall be considered loosed in heaven.

Cf. - John 21:15-17 - N. T. - After the meal Jesus said to Simon Peter, 'Simon son of Jonah, do you love me more than these others do?' He answered, 'Yes Lord, you know I love you'. Jesus said to him, 'Feed my lambs'. A second time Jesus said to him, 'Simon son of John, do you love me?' He replied, 'Yes, Lord, you know I love you'. Jesus said to him. 'Look after my sheep'. Then Jesus said to him a third time. 'Do you love me?' and said, 'Lord, you know everything; you know I love you'. Jesus said to him, 'Feed my sheep.

Cf. - Matthew 8:5-13 - N. T. - When Jesus went into Capernaum a centurion came up and pleaded with him. 'Sir,' he said 'my servant is lying at home paralysed, and in great pain.' I will come myself and cure him' said Jesus. The centurion replied, 'Sir, I am not worthy to have you under my roof; just give the word and my servant will be cured. For I am under authority myself, and have soldiers under me; and I say to one man: Go, and he goes; to another: Come here, and he comes; to my servant: Do this, and he does it.'

When Jesus heard this he was astonished and said to those following him. 'I tell you solemnly, nowhere in Israel have I found faith like this. And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven: but the subjects of the kingdom will be turned out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.' And to the centurion Jesus said, 'Go back, then; you have believed, so let this be done for you'. And the servant was cured at that moment.

Cf. - Luke 22:61 -

Cf. - Matthew 26:30-35; Mark 14:26-31 - N. T. - After psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives. Then Jesus said to them. 'You will all lose faith in me this night, for the scripture says: I shall strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered, but after my resurrection I shall go before you to Galilee'. At this, Peter said, 'Though all lose faith in you, I will never lose faith'. Jesus answered him, 'I tell you solemnly, this very night, before the cock crows, you will have disowned me three times'. Peter said to Jesus, 'Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you'. And all the disciples said the same.

Cf. - John 13:36-38 - N. T. - Simon Peter said, 'Lord, where are you going?' Jesus replied, 'Where I am going you cannot follow me now; you will follow me later'. Peter said to Jesus, 'Why can't I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.' 'Lay down your life for me?' answered Jesus. 'I tell you most solemnly, before the cock crows you will have disowned me three times.

A time of crisis - Luke 22:35-38 - N. T. -

Jesus said to them, 'When I sent you out without purse or haversack or sandals, were you short of anything? 'No' they said. Jesus said to them, 'But now if you have a purse, take it; if you have a haversack, do the same; if you have no sword, sell your cloak and buy one, because I tell you these words of scripture have to be fulfilled in me: he let himself be taken for a criminal. Yes, what scripture says about me is even now reaching its fulfillment.' 'Lord,' they said 'there are two swords here now.' Jesus said to them, 'That is enough!'

Cf. - Luke 10:4, 12:51 -

Cf. - Matthew 10:14; 23:32 - N. T. - And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the house or town shake the dust from your feet. Very well then, finish off the work that your fathers began.

Cf. - Isaiah 53:12 - O. T. - Hence I will grant whole hordes for his tribute, he shall divide the spoil with the mighty, for surrendering himself to death and letting himself be taken for a sinner, while he was bearing the faults of many and praying all the time for sinners.

Cf. - Matthew 27:38 - N. T. - At the same time two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.

The Supper - Luke 22:14-18 - N. T. -

When the hour came Jesus took his place at table, and the apostles with him. And Jesus said to them, 'I have longed to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; because, I tell you, I shall not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.'

Then, taking a cup, he gave thanks and said, 'Take this and share it among you, because from now on, I tell you, I shall not drink wine until the kingdom of God comes'.

Cf. - Luke 12:50+ -

Cf. - Matthew 8:11-12, 26:29  - N. T. - And I tell you that many will come from east and west to take their places with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob at the feast in the kingdom of heaven; but the subjects of the kingdom will be turned out into the dark, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. From now on, I tell you, I shall not drink wine until the dark I drink the new wine with you in the kingdom of my Father.

Cf. - Mark 14:25 - N. T. - I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink anymore wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.

The institution of the Eucharist - Luke 22:19-20 - N. T. -

Then Jesus took some bread, and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body which will be given for you; do this as a memorial of me'. Jesus did the same with the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you.'

Cf. - Matthew 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24 - N. T. - Now as they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and when he had said the blessings he broke it and gave it to the disciples. 'Take it and eat;' Jesus said 'this is my body.' Then he took a cup, and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them. 'Drink all of you from this,' Jesus said 'for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 - N. T. - For this is what I received from the Lord, and in turn passed on to you: that on the same night that Jesus was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread, and thanked God for it and broke it, and he said, 'This is my body, which is for you; do this as a memorial of me'. In the same way Jesus took the cup after supper, and said, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.' Until the Lord comes, therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death, and so anyone who eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will be behaving unworthily towards the body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Everyone is to recollect himself/herself before eating this bread and drinking this cup; because a person who eats and drinks without recognising the Body is eating and drinking his/her own condemnation.

Cf. - John 6:51 - N. T. - [The Lord Jesus Christ] I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I shall give is my flesh, for the life of the world.

Cf. - Jeremiah 31:31-32 - O. T. - See, the days are coming - it is Yahweh who speaks - when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel (and the House of Judah) but not a covenant like the one I made with their ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, so I had to show them who was master. It is Yahweh who speaks.

The treachery of Judas foretold - Luke 22:21-23 - N. T. -

'And yet, here with me on the table is the hand of the man who betrays me. The Son of Man does indeed go to his fate even as it has been decreed, but alas for that man by whom he is betrayed!' And they began to ask one another which of them it could be who was to do this thing.

Cf. - Matthew 26:20-25; Mark 14:17-21 - N. T. - When evening came Jesus was at table with the twelve disciples. And while they were eating he said, 'I tell you solemnly, one of you is about to betray me'. They were greatly distressed and started asking him in turn, 'Not I, Lord, surely?' Jesus answered, 'Someone who has dipped his hand into the dish with me, will betray me. The Son of Man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born!' Judas, who was to betray Jesus, asked in his turn, 'Not I, Rabbi, surely?' 'They are your own words' answered Jesus.

Cf. - John 13:21-30 - N. T. - Having said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and declared, 'I tell you most solemnly, one of you will betray me'. The disciples looked at one another, wondering which he meant. The disciple Jesus loved was reclining next to Jesus; Simon Peter signed to him and said, 'Ask who it is he means', so leaning back on Jesus' breast he said, 'Who is it, Lord?' 'It is the one' replied Jesus 'to whom I give the piece of bread that I shall dip in the dish.' He dipped the piece of bread and gave it to Judas son of Simon Iscariot.

At that instant, after Judas had taken the bread, Satan entered him. Jesus then said, 'What you are going to do, do quickly'. None of the others at table understood the reason that he said this. Since Judas had charge of the common fund, some of them thought Jesus was telling him, 'Buy what we need for the festival', or telling him to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the piece of bread he went out. Night had fallen.

Who is the greatest? - Luke 22:24-27 - N. T. -

A dispute arose also between them about which should be reckoned the greatest, but Jesus said to them, 'Among pagans it is the kings who lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are given the title Benefactor. This must not happen with you. No; the greatest among you must behave as if he were the youngest, the leader as if he were the one who serves. For who is the greater: the one at table or the one who serves? The one at table, surely? Yet here am I among you as one who serves!

Cf. - Luke 9:46 -

Cf. - Matthew 20:24-28; Mark 10:41-45 - N. T. - When the other ten heard this they began to feel indignant with James and John, so Jesus called them to him and said to them, 'You know that among the pagans their so-called rulers lord it over them, and their great men make their authority felt. This is not to happen among you. No; anyone who wants to become great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all. For the Son of Man himself did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Cf. - Luke 9:48; 12:37 -

Cf. - John 13:1-15 - N. T. - It was before the festival of the Passover, and Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to pass from this world to the Father. He had always loved those who were his in the world, but now he showed how perfect his love was. They were at supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot son of Simon, to betray him. Jesus knew that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he had come from God and was returning to God., and he got up from table, removed his outer garment and, taking a towel, wrapped it round his waist; he then poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel he was wearing.

Jesus came to Simon Peter, who said to him, 'Lord, are you going to wash my feet?' Jesus answered, 'At the moment you do not know what I am doing, but later you will understand'. 'Never!' said Peter 'You shall never wash my feet.' Jesus replied, 'If I do not wash you, you can have nothing in common with me'. 'Then, Lord,' said Simon Peter 'not only my feet, but my hands and my head as well!' Jesus said, 'No one who has taken a bath needs washing, he is clean all over. You too are clean, though not all of you are.' Jesus knew who was going to betray him, that was why he said, 'though not all of you are'.

When Jesus had washed their feet and put on his clothes again he went back to the table. 'Do you understand' he said 'what I have done to you? You call me Master and Lord, and rightly; so I am. If I, then, the Lord and Master, have washed your feet, you should wash each other's feet. I have given you an example so that you may copy what I have done to you.

                                                      VI. THE  PASSION
The conspiracy against Jesus: Judas betrays him - Luke 22:1-6 - N. T. -

The feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was now drawing near, and the chief priests and the scribes were looking for some way of doing away with him, because they mistrusted the people.

Then Satan entered into Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve. He went to the chief priests and the officers of the guard to discuss a scheme for handing Jesus over to them. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He accepted and looked for an opportunity to betray Jesus to them without the people knowing.

Cf. - Matthew 26:1-5; Mark 14:1-2 - N. T. - Jesus had now finished all he wanted to say, and he told his disciples, 'It will be Passover, as you know, in two days' time, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified'. Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, and made plans to arrest Jesus by some tricks and have him put to death. They said, however, 'It must not be during the festivities; there must be no disturbance among the people'.

Cf. - John 11:47-53 - N. T. - Many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary and had seen what Jesus did and believed in him, but some of them went to tell the Pharisees what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and Pharisees called a meeting. 'Here is this man working all these signs' they said 'and what action are we taking? If we let him go on this way everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and destroy the Holy Place and our nation.'

One of them, Caiaphas, the high priest that year, said, 'You don't seem to have grasped the situation at all; you fail to see that it is better for one man to die for the people, than for the whole nation to be destroyed'. He did not speak in his own person, it was as high priest that he made this prophecy that Jesus was to die for the nation - and not for the nation only, but to gather together in unity the scattered children of God. From that day they were determined to kill Jesus.

Cf. - Luke 11:53+ -

Cf. - Acts 5:25-26 - N. T. - Then a man arrived with fresh news. 'At this very moment' he said 'the men you imprisoned are in the Temple. They are standing there preaching to the people.' The captain went with his men and fetched them. They were afraid to use force in case the people stoned them.

Preparation for the Passover supper - Luke 22:7-13 - N. T. -

The day of Unleavened Bread came round, the day on which the Passover had to be sacrificed, and Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, 'Go and make the preparations for us to eat the Passover'. 'Where to you want us to prepare it?' they asked. 'Listen,' Jesus said 'as you go into the city you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him into the house he enters and tell the owner of the house, "The Master has this to say to you: Where is the dining room in which I can eat the Passover with my disciples?" The man will show you a large upper room furnished with couches. Make the preparations there.' They set off and found as Jesus had told them, and prepared the Passover.

Cf. - Matthew 26:17-19 - N. T. - Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus to say, 'Where do you want us to make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?' 'Go to so-and-so in the city' Jesus replied 'and say to him, "The Master says: My time is near. It is at your house that I am keeping Passover with my disciples."' The disciples did what Jesus told them and prepared the Passover.

Cf. -  Mark 14:12-16 - N. T. - On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said to Jesus, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?' So Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water. Follow him, and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is my dining room in which I can eat the Passover with my disciples?" He will show you a large upper room furnished with couches, all prepared. Make the preparations for us there.' The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as Jesus had told them, and prepared the Passover.

Cosmic disasters and the coming of the Son of Man - Luke 21:25-28 - N. T. -

'There will be signs in the sun and moon and stars; on earth nations in agony, bewildered by the clamour of the ocean and its waves; men dying of fear as they await what menaces the world, for the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand erect, hold your heads high, because your liberation is near at hand.'

Cf. - Matthew 24:29-30; Mark 13:24-26 - N. T. - Immediately after the distress of those days the sun will be darkened, the moon will lose its brightness, the stars will fall from the sky and the powers of heaven will be shaken. And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven; then too all the peoples of the earth will beat their breasts; and they will see the Son of Man on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet to gather his chosen from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Cf. - Daniel 7:13-14 - O. T. - I gazed into the visions of the night. And I saw, coming on the clouds of heaven, one like a son of man. He came to the one of great age and was led into his presence. On him was conferred sovereignty, glory and kingship, and men of all peoples, nations and languages became his servants. His sovereignty is an eternal sovereignty which shall never pass away, nor will his empire ever be destroyed.

Cf. - Hebrews 10:36-39 - N. T. - You will need endurance to do God's will and gain what he has promised: Only a little while now, a very little while, and the one that is coming will have come; he will not delay. The righteous man will live by faith, but if he draws back, my soul will take no pleasure in him. You and I are not the sort of people who draw back, and are lost by it, we are the sort who keep faithful until our souls are saved.

The time of this coming - Luke 21:29-33 - N. T. -

And Jesus told them a parable, 'Think of the fig tree and indeed every tree. As soon as you see them bud, you know that summer is now near. So with you when you see these things happening: know that the kingdom of God is near. I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

Cf. - Matthew 24:32-35; Mark 13:28-31 - N. T. - Take the fig tree as a parable: as soon as its twigs grow supple and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. So with you when you see all these things: know that he is near, at the very gates. I tell you solemnly, before this generation has passed away all these things will have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. But as for that day and hour, nobody knows it, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, no one but the Father only.

Cf. - Luke 9:27 -

Cf. - Matthew 16:28 ;Mark 9:1 - N. T. - I tell you solemnly, there are some of these standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom. And Jesus said to them, 'I tell you solemnly, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God come with power'.

Be on the alert - Luke 21:34-36 - N. T. -

'Watch yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened with debauchery and drunkenness and the cares of life, and that day will be sprung on you suddenly, like a trap. For it will come down on every living man on the face of the earth. Stay awake, praying at all times for the strength to survive all that is going to happen, and to stand with confidence before the Son of Man.'

Cf. - Luke 17:26-30 -

Cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:3 - N. T. - It is when people are saying, 'How quiet and peaceful it is' that the worst suddenly happens, as suddenly as labour pains come on a pregnant woman; and there will be no way for anybody to evade it.

Cf. - Revelation 6:17 - N. T. - For the Great Day of his anger has come, and who can survive it?

The last days of Jesus - Luke 21:37-38 - N. T. - In the daytime Jesus would be in the Temple teaching, but would spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives. And from early morning the people would gather round him in the Temple to listen to him.

Cf. - Luke 19:47+; 22:53 -

Cf. Matthew 21:16-17 ; Mark 11:11,19 - 'Do you hear what they are saying?' they said to Jesus. 'Yes,' Jesus answered 'have you never read this: By the mouths of children, babes in arms, you have made sure of praise?' With that Jesus left them and went out of the city to Bethany where he spent the night.

Cf. - John 8:2 - N. T. - As daybreak Jesus appeared in the Temple again; and as all the people came to him, he sat down and began to teach them.

The siege - Luke 21:20-23 - N. T. -

When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, you must realise that she will soon be laid desolate. Then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains, those inside the city must leave it, and those in country districts must not take refuge in it. For this is the time of vengeance when all that scripture says must be fulfilled. Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come!

Cf. - Matthew 24:15-20; Mark 13:14-18 - N. T. - So when you see the disastrous abomination, of which the prophet Daniel spoke, set up in the Holy Place (let the reader understand), then those in Judaea must escape to the mountains; if a man is on the housetop, he must not come down to collect his belongings; if a man is in the fields, he must not turn back to fetch his cloak. Alas for those with child, or with babies at the breast, when those days come! Pray that you will not have to escape in winter or on a Sabbath.

Cf. - Luke 17:31 -

The disaster and the age of the pagans - Luke 21:24 - N. T. -

For great misery will descend on the land and wrath on this people. They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive to every pagan country; and Jerusalem will be trampled down by the pagans until the age of the pagans is completely over.

Cf. - Matthew 24:21; Mark 13:19 - N. T. - For then there will be be great distress such as, until now, since the world began, there never has been, nor ever will be again. For in those days there will be such distress as, until now, has not been equalled since the beginning when God created the world, nor ever will be again.

Cf. - Psalms 81:15 - O. T. - Then those who hate Yahweh would cringe, their doom being sealed for ever.

Cf. - Romans 1:18-25 - N. T. - The anger of God is being revealed from heaven against all the impiety and depravity of men who keep truth imprisoned in their wickedness. For what can be known about God is perfectly plain to them since God himself has made it plain. Ever since God created the world his everlasting power and deity - however invisible - have been there for the mind to see in the things he has made. That is why such people are without excuse: they knew God and yet refused to honour him as God or to thank him; instead, they made nonsense out of logic and their empty minds were darkened.

The more they called themselves philosophers, the more stupid they grew, until they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for a worthless imitation, for the image of mortal man, of birds, of quadrupeds and reptiles. That is why God left them to their filthy enjoyments and the practices with which they dishonour their own bodies, since they have given up divine truth for a lie and have worshipped and served creatures instead of the creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen!

Cf. - Deuteronomy 28:64-66 - O.T. - Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other; there you will serve other gods of wood and of stone that neither you nor your fathers have known. Among these nations there will be no repose for you, no rest for the sole of your foot; Yahweh will give you a quaking heart, weary eyes, halting breath. Your life from the outset will be a burden to you; night and day you will go in fear, uncertain of your life.

Cf. - Revelation 11:1-2 - N. T. - Then I was given a long cane as a measuring rod, and I was told, Go and measure God's sanctuary, and the altar, and the people who worship there; but leave out the outer court and do not measure it, because it has been handed over to pagans - they will trample on the holy city for forty-two months.

Cf. - Daniel 12:7 - O. T. - I heard the man speak who was dressed in linen, standing further up the stream: he raised his right hand and his left to heaven and swore by him who lives for ever, 'A time and two times, and half a time; and all these things are going to happen when he who crushes the power of the holy people meets his end'.
