PENANCE has been part of the true religion. Penances can be formal or informal, but they amount to the same thing - expressions before God of sorrows over one's sins, which is not only required by God but also by human nature; human being have an innate need to mourns tragedies, and their sins are tragedies. For instance:

Abortion is a grave sin, "God alone is the Lord of life from the beginning until its end. No one can under any circumstances claim for himself and herself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being."

The person murdered through abortion has the same right to life as those who conspire to kill him or her - his mother, the abortionist, and the politician who legislates the "right to kill."

To speak of one's right over one's body as justification for abortion is sophistry. There is not one body but two, not one person but two, both with an equal right to life. Since it is a grave sin, it carries with it, unless there is repentance, the frightful sanction of eternal death.

Abortion kills the body of the victim and mortally wounds the soul of the killer, but the soul of the victim is unharmed. The crime of abortion is nearly always a chain sin. A cluster of persons share the guilt - abortionist, assistants, office staff, hospital management, advertisers, politicians and those who remained passive when they should have spoken or acted or prayed.

Prayer and penance would save. "Prayer is the one thing that can conquer God". We can choose life and death. Is there enough faith left to choose life?

If we live by the truth and in love, we shall grow in all ways into Christ Jesus, who is the head by whom the whole body is fitted and joined together, every joint adding its own strength, for each separate part to work according to it function. So the body grows until it has built itself up, in love." - Ephesians 4:15-16 - 

I still have many things to say to you but they would be too much for you now. But when the spirit of truth comes, he will lead you to the complete truth, since he will not be speaking as from himself, but will say only what he has learnt; and he will tell you of the things to come. He/She will glorify me, since all he/she tells you will be taken from what is mine.
