The New Covenant refers to God has made with mankind, based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The concept of a new covenant originated with the promise of the true prophet Jeremiah that God would accomplish for His people what the old covenant had failed to do. Under the new covenant, God would write His Law on human hearts. The promised action, suggested a new level of obedience, a new knowledge of the Lord and a new forgiveness of sin.

See, the days are coming - it is Yahweh who speaks - when I will make a new covenant with the House of Israel ( and the House of Judah) but not a covenant like the one I made with the ancestors on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. They broke that covenant of mine, so I have to shown them who was master. It is Yahweh who speaks: No, this is the covenant I will make with the House of Israel when those days arrive - it is Yahweh who speaks. Deep within them I will plant my Law, writing it on their hearts. Then I will be their God and shall be my people. There will be no further need for neighbour to try to teach neighbour, or brother to say to brother, 'Learn to know Yahweh!' No, they will all know me, the least no less than the greatest - it is Yahweh who speaks - since I will forgive their iniquity and never call their sin to mind. - Jer. 31:31-34 -

The New Testament, which itself means 'new covenant', interprets the work of the Lord Jesus Christ as bringing this promised new covenant into being.

Now as they were eating, Jesus took some bread and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to the disciples. 'Take it and eat;' he said 'this is my body'. Then he took a cup and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them. 'Drink all of you from this,' he said 'for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. From now on, I tell you, I shall not drink wine the day I drink the new wine with you in the kingdom of my Father.' - Matt. 26:26-29 -

And as they were eating he took some bread and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it to them. 'Take it.' he said 'this is my body.' Then he took a cup and when he had returned thanks he gave it to them and all drank from it, and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, which is to be poured out for many. I tell you solemnly, I shall not drink any more wine until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdom of God.' - Mark 14:22-25 -

Then he took some bread and when he had given thanks, broke it and gave it to them saying, 'This is my body which will be given for you; do this as a memorial of me.' He did the same with the cup after supper and said, 'this cup is the new covenant in my blood which will be poured out for you.' - Luke 22:19-20 -

I am the bread of life.
Your fathers ate manna in the desert
and they are dead;
but this is the bread that comes down from heaven,
so that a man may eat it and not die.
I am the living bread which has come down from heaven.
Anyone who eats this bread will live forever;
and the bread that I shall give
is my flesh, for the life of the world.

Then the Jews started arguing with one another: 'How can this man give us his flesh to eat?' they said, Jesus replied:

I tell you most solemnly,
if you do not eat the flesh of the Son of the Man
and drink his blood,
you will not have life in you.
Anyone who does eat my flesh and drink my blood
has eternal life,
and I shall raise him up on the last day.
For my flesh is real food
and my blood is real drink.
He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood
lives in me
and I live in him. - John 6:48-57 -

Now that I am on the subject of instructions..... I hear that when you all come together as a community, there are separate factions among you and I half believe it - since there must be no doubt be separate groups among you, to distinguish those who are to be trusted. The point is, when you hold this meetings, it is not the Lord's Supper that you are eating, since...........................................
'This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Whenever you drink it, do this as a memorial of me.' Until the Lord comes, therefore. every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are proclaiming his death and so anyone who eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will be behaving unworthily towards the body and blood of the Lord.

Every one is to recollect himself before eating this bread and drinking this cup; because a person who eats and drinks without recognising the Body is eating and drinking his own condemnation. In fact that is why many of you are weak and ill and some of you have died......... Anyone who is hungry should eat at home and then your meeting will not bring your condemnation. - 1Cor. 11:17-34 -

So, since the Law has no more than a reflection of these realities, ................ ................................................................................... By virtue of that one single offering, he has achieved the eternal perfection of all whom he is sanctifying. The Holy Spirit assures us of this; for he says, first:

This is the covenant I will make with them
when those days arrive;

and the Lord then goes on to say:

I will put my laws into their hearts
and write them on their minds,
I will never call their sins to mind,
or their offences. - Heb. 10:1-18 -

I have through years of reading, pondering, reflecting and contemplating, the 3 things that last; FAITH . HOPE . LOVE and I would like to made available my sharing from the many thinkers, authors, scholars and theologians whose ideas and thoughts I have borrowed. God be with them always. Amen!

I STILL HAVE MANY THINGS TO SAY TO YOU BUT THEY WOULD BE TOO MUCH FOR YOU NOW. BUT WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL LEAD YOU TO THE COMPLETE TRUTH, SINCE HE WILL NOT BE SPEAKING AS FROM HIMSELF, BUT WILL SAY ONLY WHAT HE HAS LEARNT; AND HE WILL TELL YOU OF THE THINGS TO COME.

HE WILL GLORIFY ME, SINCE ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. EVERYTHING THE FATHER HAS IS MINE; THAT IS WHY I SAID: ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. - JOHN 16:12-15 -

God bestows more consideration on the purity of intention with which our actions are performed than on the actions themselves - Saint August...
