The vast majority of biblical genealogies occur in the Old Testament. An important one deals with the descent from Adam to Noah - Gen. 5:1-32 - The descendants of Noah, the line from Shem to Abraham and the long list of Abraham's offspring are extremely important for the early history of the Israelites. - Gen. 10; 11:10-26 - The longest Old Testament genealogy contains a detailed list of persons from Adam to the time of Saul. - 1Chron. chapter 1 to 9 - The list was probably compiled at a later time in the history of the Hebrews to enable people to trace their descent from proven Israelite stock. The house of David was reckoned back to Judah. - Gen. 46:12 -

Genealogy is a list of a person's ancestors that normally contains the members of each generation in succession. When compiled in the form of a "family tree" it begins at the bottom with the root stock from which the family came, then advances and branches out as the "tree" grows. When the genealogy records descent from ancestors by generations, the originating stock is listed first and all subsequent descendants are derived from it.

The genealogies of Christ in the Gospels show the way in which the details of the Lord's descent from the house of David has been preserved through the centuries. This was an important genealogy because of the promises of the prophets about the Messiah.

A genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham;
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah, Tamar being their mother,
Perez was the father Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram was the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon was the father of Boaz, Rahab being his mother,
Boaz was the father of Obed, Ruth being his mother,
Obed was the father of Jesse;
and Jesse was the father of king David.

David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife,
Solomon was the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
Asa was the father of Joram,
Joram the father of Azariah,
Azariah was the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah;
and Josiah was the father of Jechoniah and his brothers.

Then the deportation to Babylon:
Jechoniah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel,
Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud,
Abiud was the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
Azor was the father Zadok,
Zadok the father of Achim,
Achim the father of Eliud,
Eliud was the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob;
and Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary;
of her was born Jesus who is called Christ.

The sum of generations is therefore: fourteen from Abraham to David; fourteen from David to the Babylonian deportation; and fourteen from the Babylonian deportation to Christ.

This is how Jesus Christ came to be born. His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph; but before they came to live together she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a man of honour and wanting to spare her publicity decided to divorce her informally. He had made up his mind to do this when the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, 'Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife because she has conceived what is in her by the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son and you must name him Jesus because he is the one who is to save his people from their sins'. Now all this took place to fulfil the words spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son and they will call him Immanuel", a name which means 'God-is-with-us'. When Joseph woke up he did what the angel of the Lord had told him to do: he took his wife to his home and though he had not intercourse with her, she gave birth to a son; and he named him Jesus. - Matthew chapter 1 - Luke 3:23-38 -

I have through years of reading, pondering, reflecting and contemplating, the 3 things that last; FAITH . HOPE . LOVE and I would like to made available my sharing from the many thinkers, authors, scholars and theologians whose ideas and thoughts I have borrowed. God be with them always. Amen!

I STILL HAVE MANY THINGS TO SAY TO YOU BUT THEY WOULD BE TOO MUCH FOR YOU NOW. BUT WHEN THE SPIRIT OF TRUTH COMES, HE WILL LEAD YOU TO THE COMPLETE TRUTH, SINCE HE WILL NOT BE SPEAKING AS FROM HIMSELF, BUT WILL SAY ONLY WHAT HE HAS LEARNT; AND HE WILL TELL YOU OF THE THINGS TO COME.

HE WILL GLORIFY ME, SINCE ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. EVERYTHING THE FATHER HAS IS MINE; THAT IS WHY I SAID: ALL HE TELLS YOU WILL BE TAKEN FROM WHAT IS MINE. - JOHN 16:12-15 -
