Martha and Mary - Luke 10:38-42 - N. T. -

In the course of their journey Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, 'Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.' But the lord answered: 'Martha, Martha,' he said 'you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.'

Cf. - John 11:1-4 - N. T. - There was a man named Lazarus who lived in the village of Bethany with the two sisters, Mary and Martha, and he was ill. It was the same Mary, the sister of the sick man Lazarus, who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair. The sisters sent this message to Jesus, 'Lord, the man you love is ill'. On receiving the message, Jesus said, 'The sickness will end not in death but in God's glory and through it the Son of God will be glorified'.

Cf. - Luke 8:35+ -

Cf. - 1 Corinthians 7:35 - N. T. - I say this only to help you, not to put a halter round your necks, but simply to make sure that everything is as it should be, and that you give your undivided attention to the Lord.

Cf. - Luke 8:3+ -

Cf. - Matthew 6:33-34 - N. T. - Set your hearts on his kingdom first, and on his righteousness, and all these other things will be given you as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Cf. - John 6:27 - N. T. - Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life, the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.'

It is true, God sent his word to the people of Israel, and it was to them that the Good News of peace was brought by Jesus Christ - But Jesus Christ is Lord of all men. - Acts 10:36 -

To you my friends I say: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after can do no more. I will tell you whom to fear: fear Him who after he has killed, has the power to cast into hell. - Luke 12:4-5 -

I shall not call you servants anymore,
because a servant does not know
his/her master's business;
I call you friends,
because I have made known to you
everything I have learnt from my Father. - John 15:15 -

IF WE LIVE BY THE TRUTH AND IN LOVE, WE SHALL GROW IN ALL WAYS INTO CHRIST JESUS, WHO IS THE HEAD BY WHOM THE WHOLE BODY IS FITTED AND JOINED TOGETHER, EVERY JOINT ADDING ITS OWN STRENGTH, FOR EACH SEPARATE PART TO WORK ACCORDING TO IT FUNCTION. WELCOME TO SACRED SCRIPTURE / WORD OF GOD / HOLY BIBLE READER'S COMMUNITY. - Wishing you, 'Happy Reading', and may God, the Father, the Son of the living God, Jesus Christ, fills your heart, mind, thoughts, and grants you: The Holy Spirit, that is, Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Counsel, Piety, Fortitude, Fear of the Lord, and also His fruits of the Holy Spirit, that is, Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Trustfulness, Gentleness and Self-Control. How? And in what way, when it come to understanding matters: What I was always being told is: There are ways and preferences to comprehend all matters, whether it is of spirituality and unspirituality.

Firstly, in a literally manner: That is, used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true.

Secondly, in a humanly manner: That is, from a human point of view, in a humanly manner, by human means; within ability; with human feeling or kindness.

Thirdly, in a spiritually manner: That is, in a way that relates to or affects the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.

Finally, in an unspiritual manner: That is, not spiritual. But secular and worldly.

Hence, these two books (The Gospel According To Apostle/Saint Luke & The Acts Of The Apostles) of the New Testament were closely associated, and being call 'a history of the rise of Christianity'. Therefore, I faithfully believe that it is utmost importance for us; all human beings to comprehend these two books, [ All the others Old Testament and New Testament books are equally importance, but as for now, we will start studying and read these two books first, that is, being call 'a history of the rise of Christianity', before continuing the other books.] to the best of our knowledge and enabling our spirit to acknowledges: "Who is God, and how, and in what ways, that is, God is with us." The great commandment - Luke 10:25-28 - N. T. -

There was a lawyer who, to disconcert Jesus, stood up and said to him, 'Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?' Jesus said to him, 'What is written in the Law? What do you read there?' He replied, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself'. You have answered right,' said Jesus 'do this and life is yours.'

Cf. - Matthew 22:23-40; Mark 12:28-31 - N. T. - That day some Sadducees - who deny that there is a resurrection - approached Jesus and they put this question to him, 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, to raise children for his brother. Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leaving his wife to his brother; the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh, and then last of all the woman herself died.

Now at the resurrection to which of those seven will she be wife, since she had been married to them all?' Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God. For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like angels in heaven. And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you: I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? God is God, not of the dead, but of the living. And this teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it.

But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law? Jesus said, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hand the whole Law, and the Prophets also.'

Cf. - 2 Chronicles 28:15 - O. T. - Men expressly nominated for the purpose saw to the relief of the prisoners. Fromm the booty they clothed all those of them who were naked; they gave them clothing and sandals and provided them with food, drink and shelter. They mounted all those who were infirm on donkeys and took them back to their kinsmen at Jericho, the city of palm trees. then they returned to Samaria.

Cf. - Proverbs 3:27-28 - O. T. - Do not refuse a kindness to anyone who begs it, if it in your power to perform it. Do not say to your neighbour, 'Go away! Come another time! I will give it to you tomorrow', if you can do it now.

Cf. - Matthew 19:16-26 - N. T. - And there was a man who came to Jesus and asked, 'Master, what good deed must I do to posses eternal life?' Jesus said to him,............

Cf. - Deuteronomy 6:4-9 - O. T. - 'Listen, Israel: Yahweh our God is the one Yahweh. You shall love Yahweh your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Let these words I urge on you today be written on your heart. You shall repeat them to your children and say them over and over to them whether at rest in your house or walking abroad, at your lying down or at your rising; you shall fasten them on your hand as a sign and on your forehead as a circlet; you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

Cf. - Leviticus 18:5; 19:18; Proverbs 19:16 - O. T. - I am Yahweh your God. You must keep my laws and my customs. Whoever complies with them will find life in them. "I am the Yahweh." You must not exact vengeance, nor must you bear a grudge against the children of your people. You must love your neighbour as yourself. I am Yahweh.

Parable of the good Samaritan - Luke 10:29-37 - N. T. -

But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, 'And who is my neighbour?' Jesus replied, 'A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.

In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. he went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. "Look after him," he said "and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have." Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands' hands?' 'The one who took pity on him' he replied. Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do the same yourself'.

Cf. - John 4:9 - N. T. - The Samaritan woman said to Jesus, 'What? You are a Jew and you ask me, a Samaritan, for a drink? - Jews, in fact, do not associate with Samaritans.

Cf. - Luke 17:16 -

Cf. Isaiah 1:6 - O. T. - The whole head is sick, the whole heart grown faint; from the sole of the foot to the head there is not a sound spot: wounds, bruises, open sores not dressed, not bandaged, not soothed with oil.

Just as God originally inspired the Sacred Scripture/Holy Bible, He has used this means to preserve His Word for future generations. But behind the writing lay periods of time when these messages were circulated in spoken form. [Oral Tradition] The stories of the patriarchs were passed from generation to generation by word of mouth before they were written. [Written Tradition] The messages of the prophets were delivered orally before they were fixed in writing. Narratives of the life and ministry of Christ Jesus were repeated orally for two or three decades before they were given written form.

True cause for the apostles to rejoice - Luke 10:17-20 - N. T. -

The seventy-two came back rejoicing. 'Lord,' they said 'even the devils submit to us when we use your name.' Jesus said to them, 'I watched Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Yes, I have given you power to tread underfoot serpents and scorpions and the whole strength of the enemy; nothing shall ever hurt you. Yet do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you; rejoice rather that your names are written in heaven.'

Cf. - Luke 1:14+ -

Cf. - Acts 3:16-21 - N. T. - It is the name of Jesus which, through our faith in it, has brought back the strength of this man you see here and who is well known to you. It is faith in that name that has restored this man to health, as you can all see. Now I know, brothers, that neither you nor your leaders had any idea what you were doing; this was the way God carried out what he had foretold, when he said through all his prophets that Christ would suffer. Now you must repent and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, and so that the Lord may send the time of comfort. Then he will send the Christ he has predestined, that is, Jesus, whom heaven must keep till the universal restoration comes which God proclaimed, speaking through his holy prophets.

Cf. - Isaiah 14:12,15 - O. T. - How did you come to fall from heavens, Daystar, son of Dawn? How did you come to be thrown to the ground, you who enslaved the nations? What! Now you have fallen to Sheol to the very bottom of the abyss!

Cf. - John 12:31-32 - N. T. - 'Now sentence is being passed on this world; now the prince of this world is to be overthrown. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I shall draw all men to myself.'

Cf. - Matthew 8:28-33 - N. T. - When Jesus reached the country of the Gadarenes on the other side, two demoniacs came towards him out of the tombs-creatures so fierce that no one could pass that way. They stood there shouting, 'What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torture us before the time? Now some distance away there were a large herd of pigs feeding, and the devils pleaded with Jesus, 'If you cast us out, send us to into the herd of pigs'. And Jesus said to them, 'Go then' and they came out and made for the pigs; and at that the whole herd charged down the cliff into the lake and perished in the water.

Cf. - Psalms 91:13 - O. T. - You will tread on lion and adder, trample on savage lions and dragons.

Cf. - Revelation 12:7-12 - N. T. - And now war broke out in heaven, when Michael with his angels attacked the dragon. The dragon fought back with his angels, but they were defeated and driven out of heaven. The great dragon, the primeval serpent, known as the devil or Satan, who had deceived all the world, was hurled down to the earth and his angels were hurled down with him. Then I heard a voice shout from heaven;

'Victory and power and empire for ever have been won by our God, and all authority for his Christ, now that the persecutor, who accused our brothers day and night before our God, has been brought down. They have triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the witness of their martyrdom, because even in the face of death they would not cling to life. Let the heavens rejoice and all who live there; but for you, earth and sea, trouble is coming-because the devil has gone down to you in a rage, knowing that his days are numbered.'

Cf. - Matthew 10:1; Mark 16:17-18 - N. T. - Jesus summoned his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits with power to cast them out and to cure all kinds of diseases and sickness.

Cf. - Revelation 20:11-15 - N. T. - Then I saw a great white throne and the One who was sitting on it. In his presence, earth and sky vanished, leaving no trace. I saw the dead, both great and small, standing in front of his throne, while the book of life was opened, and other books opened which were the record of what they had done in their lives, by which the dead were judged.

The sea gave up all the dead who were in it; Death and Hades were emptied of the dead that were in them; and everyone was judged according to the way in which he had lived. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the burning lake. This burning lake is the second death; and anybody whose name could not be found written in the book of life was thrown into the burning lake.

The Good News revealed to the simple. The Father and the Son - Luke 10:21-22 - N. T. -

It was then that, filled with joy by the Holy Spirit, Jesus said, 'I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.'

Cf. - Matthew 11:25-27; Luke 1:14+; 4:1+; 8:10 - N. T. -

Cf. - Revelation 19:12-13 - N. T. - His eyes were flames of fire, and his head was crowned with many coronets; the name written on him was known only to himself, his cloak was soaked in blood. He is known by the name, The Word of God.

The privilege of the disciples - Luke 10:23-34 - N. T. -

Then turning to his disciples Jesus spoke to them in private, 'Happy the eyes that see what you see, for I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it'.

Cf. - Matthew 13:16-17 - N. T. - But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.

The mission of the seventy-two disciples- Luke 10:1-16 - N. T. -

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out ahead of him, in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself was to visit. Jesus said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest. Start off now, but remember, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no purse, no haversack, no sandals. Salute no one on the road. Whatever house you go into, let your first words be, "Peace be this house!" And if a man of peace lives there, your peace will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house.'

Whenever you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is set before you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is very near to you". But whenever you enter a town and they do not make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, "We wipe off the very dust of your town that clings to our feet and leave it with you. Yet be sure of this: the kingdom of God is very near." I tell you, on that day it will not go as hard with Sodom as with that town.

'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. And still, it will not go as hard with Tyre and Sidon at the Judgement as with you. And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be exalted high as heaven? You shall be thrown down to hell.

'Anyone who listens to you listens to me; anyone who rejects you rejects me, and those who reject me reject the one who sent me.'

Cf. - Luke 9:1-2 -

Cf. - Matthew 9:37-38 - N. T. - Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to his harvest'.

Cf. - John 4:36 - N. T. - Already the reapers is being paid his wages, already he is bringing in the grain for eternal life, and thus sower and reaper rejoice together.

Cf. - Matthew 10:16 - N. T. - Remember I am sending you out like sheep among wolves, so be cunning as serpents and yet as harmless as doves.

Cf. - Luke 9:3-5; 22:35 -

Cf. - 2 Kings 4:29 - O. T. - Elisha said to Gehazi, 'Tuck up your cloak, take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet anyone, do not greet him; if anyone greets you, do not answer him.

Cf. - Matthew 10:9-16; Mark 6:8-11 - N. T. - Provide yourselves with no gold or silver, not even with a few coppers for your purses, with no haversack for the journey or spare tunic or footwear or a staff, for the workman deserves his keep. 'Whatever town or village you go into, ask for someone trustworthy and stay with until you leave. As you enter his house, and if the house deserves it, let your peace descend upon it; if it does not, let your peace come back to you.

And if anyone does not welcome you or listen to what you have to say, as you walk out of the house or town shake the dust from your feet. I tell you solemnly, on the day of Judgement it will not go as hard with the land of Sodom and Gomorrah as with that town. Remember, I am sending you out like sheep among wolves; so be cunning as serpents and yet as harmless as doves.

Cf. - 1 Timothy 5:18 - N. T. - As scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the corn; and again: The worker deserves his pay.

Cf. - Matthew 3:2 - N. T. - 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand'. This was the man the prophet Isaiah of when he said: A voice cries in the wilderness: Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight.

Cf. - Matthew 10:7 - N. T. - And as you go, proclaim that the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.

Cf. - Acts 28:7-8; Acts 13:51-52 - N. T. - In that neighbourhood there were estates belonging to the prefect of the island, whose name was Publius. He received us and entertained us hospitably for three days. It is so happened that Publius' father was in bed, suffering from feverish attacks and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after a prayer he laid his hands on the man and healed him. - So they shook the dust from their feet in defiance and went off to Iconium; but the disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.

Cf. - Matthew 11:21-24 - N. T. - 'Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsadia! For if the miracles done in you had been dine in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard on Judgement day with Tyre and Sidon as with you. And as for you, Capernaum, did you want to be exalted as high as heaven? You shall be thrown down to hell. For if the miracles done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have been standing yet. And still, I tell you that it will not go as hard with with land of Sodom on Judgement day as with you.'

Cf. - Isaiah 14:13-15 - O. T. - You who used to think to yourself, "I will climb up to the heavens; and higher than the stars of God. I will set my throne. I will sit on the Mount of Assembly in the recesses of the north. I will climb to the top of thunderclouds, I will rival the Most High." What! Now you have fallen to Sheol to the very bottom of the abyss!'

Cf. - Luke 9:48 -

Cf. - Exodus 16:8 - O. T. - Moses said, 'In the evening Yahweh will give you meat to eat, in the morning bread to your heat's content, for Yahweh has heard the complaints you made against him; your complaining is not against us - for what are we? - but against Yahweh'.

Cf. - Matthew 10:40 - N. T. - 'Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me.

Cf. - Mark 9:37 - N. T. - 'Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the ones who sent me'.

Cf. - John 13:20 - N. T. - I tell you most solemnly, whoever welcomes the one I send welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.'

[Written Tradition] The messages of the prophets were delivered orally before they were fixed in writing. Narratives of the life and ministry of Christ Jesus were repeated orally for two or three decades before they were given written form.

IV. THE JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM

A Samaritan village is inhospitable - Luke 9:51-56 - N. T. -

Now as the time draw near for Jesus to be taken up to heaven, he resolutely took the road for Jerusalem and sent messengers ahead of him. These set out, and they went into a Samaritan village to make preparations for him, but the people would not receive him because he was making for Jerusalem. Seeing this, the disciples James and John said, 'Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to burn them up? But Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they went off to another village.

Cf. - Luke 13:22; 17:11; 18:31; 19:28; 24:51 -

Cf. - Matthew 19:1 - N. T. - Jesus had now finished what he wanted to say, and he left Galilee and came into the part of Judaea which is on the far side of the Jordan.

Cf. - Mark 10:1 - N. T. - Leaving there, he came to the district of Judaea and the far side of the Jordan. And again crowds gathered round him, and again he taught them, as his custom was.

Cf. - 2 Kings 1:10 - O. T. - Elijah answered the captain. 'If I am a man of God, let the fire come down from heaven and destroy both of you and your fifty men'. And fire came down from heaven and destroyed him and his fifty men.

Hardships of the apostolic calling - Luke 9:57-62 - N. T. -

As they travelled along they met a man on the road who said to him, 'I will follow you wherever you go'. Jesus answered, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head'.

Another to whom he said, 'Follow me', replied, 'Let me go and bury my father first'. But he answered, 'Leave the dead to bury their dead; your duty is to go and spread the news of the kingdom of God'. Another said, 'I will follow you, sir, but first let me go and say goodbye to my people at home'. Jesus said to him, 'Once the hand is laid on the plough, no one who looks back is fit for the kingdom of God'.

Cf. - Matthew 8:18-22 - N. T. - When Jesus saw the great crowds all about him he gave orders to leave for the other side. One of the scribes then came up and said to him, 'Master, I will follow you wherever you go'. Jesus replied, 'Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head'. Another man, one of his disciples, said to him, 'Sir, let me go and bury my father first'. But Jesus replied, 'Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead'.

Cf. - Luke 14:26, 33 -

Cf. -1 Kings 19:19-21 - O. T. - Leaving there, he came on Elisha son of Shaphat as he was ploughing behind twelve yoke of oxen, he himself being with the twelfth. Elijah passed near to him and threw his cloak over him. Elisha left his oxen and ran after Elijah. 'Let me kiss my father and mother, then I will follow you' he said. Elijah answered, 'Go, go back; for have I done anything to you?' Elisha turned away, took the pair of oxen and slaughtered them. He used the plough for cooking the oxen, then gave to his men, who ate. He then rose, and followed Elijah and became his servant.

Cf. - Philippians 3:13 - N. T. - I can assure you my brothers, I am far from thinking that I have already won. All I can say is that I forget the past and I strain ahead for what is still to come.

Theology? Isn't that the study of religion? So, what does it have to do with me? Isn't it concern priests, theologians and the Vatican?

As Rev. Fr. Michael Amaladoss SJ, the Assistant to Father General Peter-Hans Kolvenbach SJ, responsible for Dialogue and Ecumenism (May 1992-...) puts it, "Faith looks, not only backward to God's saving and powerful presence in history, but also to the future that God invites us to create in the power of the Word and of the Spirit. Theology is therefore not an abstract philosophical elaboration of eternal verities reserved to a few expert professionals. It is a discerning search for God in the here and now of history that is the concern of everyone".

In this sense, theology must be the concern of every Christian and more so of every Christian in Malaysia.

It is the recognition of the Malaysian situation, specifically that of Saint Francis Xavier's Church (Petaling Jaya, Selangor.), that has prompted the central argument in Theology of Shoes-off, an initial effort on the part of Rev. Fr. Joseph (Jojo) Fung SJ to identify the elements that could form our very own Malaysian Theology.

Rev. Fr. Amaladoss SJ has this to say about Theology of Shoes-off. The flowering of local theology is a sign of the rootedness and maturity of a particular Church. So I am glad to welcome and introduce this pioneering effort by Rev. Fr. Joseph (Jojo) Fung SJ to develop a Malaysian theology of "Shoes-off".

BY REV. FR. JOSEPH  MATTHEW  FUNG  JEE  VUI  ( JOJO ) SJ, was the Parish Priest of SFX Church (Petaling Jaya, Selangor.) from 1988 to 1992.

                     -  The central emphasis of Jesus' teaching is the kingdom of God  - In Christian theology, the Holy Spirit is under...
