Love tends to become like the one loved. God loved unworthy people.

Like action, suffering is a part of our human existence. Suffering stems partly from our finitude, and partly from the mass of sin which has accumulated over the course of history, and continues to grow unabated today.

Certainly we must do whatever we can to reduce suffering; to avoid as far as possible the suffering of the innocent; to soothe pain; to give assistance in overcoming mental suffering. These are obligations both in justice and in love.

Great progress has been made in the battle against physical pain; yet the sufferings of the innocent and the mental suffering have, if anything, increased in decades.

Indeed, we must do all we can to overcome suffering, but to banish it from the world altogether is not in our power. This is simply because we are unable to shake off our finitude and because none of us is capable of eliminating the power of evil, of sin which, as we plainly see, is a constant source of suffering. Only God is able to do this; only a God who personally enters history by making himself man and suffering within history.

We know that this God exists, and hence that this power to "take away the sin of the world" is present in the world. Through faith in the existence of this power, hope for the world's healing has emerged in history.

It is, however, hope - not yet fulfillment; hope that gives us the courage to place ourselves on the side of good even in seemingly hopeless situations, aware that, as far as the external course of history is concerned, the power of sin will continue to be terrible presence.

If justice and mercy were to be reconciled, there would have to be a Incarnation, which means God assuming a human nature in such a way that He will be true God and true man. There would have to be a union of God and man, built upon somewhat the same lines as the union of spirit and matter in man.

Man has a double nature, the nature of the body which is material, the nature of the soul which is spiritual, and yet he is only one person. The Incarnation of God would imply some such union of two natures in the unity of a person, but quite naturally a far more perfect one.

Let us make this solution clear by an example. On the desk before me is a pencil. That pencil represents human nature; of itself the pencil cannot write. My hand now goes down to the pencil, takes it up, moves it across a paper, and immediately the pencil is endowed with a power which before it had not. If after I had written, you should ask me who wrote the lines, I would not say my fingers wrote them, nor would I say my pencil wrote them, but I would say, I wrote them.

In other words, we attribute the actions of various natures to a person and the one thing that characterizes the person is not action, not nature, not direction, but responsibility.

That is why I do not say my stomach is hungry, but I am hungry; not my eyes see, but I see. Actions belong to the person.

Now let the pencil represent poor human nature, of itself unable to pay an infinite debt to God. Imagine now a divine person with a divine nature coming down to that human, taking it up and becoming united with it in a far more perfect way than my hand is united with the pencil.

If such an act of condescension should ever happen, the action of the human nature and the action of the divine nature would not be attributed to either nature alone, as the action of the pencil would not be attributed to the nature of the pencil or to the nature of the hand alone; it would be attributed to the person.

But if the person were one of the Persons of the Blessed Trinity, namely, the second Person, the eternal Son of God, it would follow that every thought, every word, every sigh, every tear of the human nature of that person would be the very thought, very word, very sigh, and very tear of God.

Then justice and mercy could be reconciled.

It was the refusal of people to love the best that created the most difficult problem in the whole history of humanity, namely the problem of restoring peoples to the favour of Divine Love.

In short, the problem was this; Man had sinned; but his sin was not merely a rebellion against another man, but a revolt against the infinite love of God.

Therefore his sin was infinite. Man, who is finite, owes an infinite debt. But how can a man who owes a million pay the debt with a cent? How can the human atone to the divine? How can justice and mercy be reconciled?

 If satisfaction is ever to be made for the fall of man, the finite and the infinite, the human and the divine. God and man must in some way be linked together. It would not do for God alone to come down and suffer as God alone, for then He would not have anything in common with man; the sin was not God's, but man's. It would not do for man alone to suffer or atone, for the merit of his sufferings would be only finite.

If the satisfaction were to be complete, two conditions would have to be fulfilled; First, man would have to be man to act as man and to atone. Man would have to be God in order that his sufferings should have an infinite value.

But in order that the finite and the infinite should not be acting as two distinct personalities, and in order that infinite merit should result from man's suffering, God and man in some way would have to become one, or in other words, there would have to be a God-man.

Love is naturally expansive, but Divine Love is creative. Love told the secret of its goodness to nothingness, and that was creation.

Love made something like unto its own image and likeness, and that was man. Love is prodigal of its gifts, and that was the elevation of man to the adoptive son-ship of God.

Love must always run risks of not being loved in return, for love is free. The human heart refused to return that love in the only way in which love can ever be shown, namely by confidence and trust in a moment of trail.

Man thus lost the gifts of God, darkened his intellect, weakened his will, and brought the first or original sin into the world, for sin is ultimately a refusal to love.

Faith is Hope. Hope is equivalent to Faith. Faith, Hope and Love go together.

All serious and upright human conduct is hope in action. This is so, first of all, in the sense that we strive to realise our lesser and greater hopes, to complete this or that task which is important for our onward journey, or we work towards a brighter and more human world so as to open doors into the future.

Yet our daily efforts in pursuing our own lives and in working for the world's future either tire us or turn into fanaticism, unless we are enlightened by the radiance of the great hope that cannot be destroyed even by small-scale failures or by a breakdown in matters of historic importance.

If we cannot hope for more than is effectively attainable at any given time, or more than is promised by political or economic authorities, our lives will soon be without hope.

Therefore, it is important to know that we can always continue to hope, even if it in our own life, or the historical period in which we are living, there seems to be nothing to hope for, Only the great certitude of hope that our own life and history in general, despite all failures, are held firm by the indestructible power of Love.

Faith and reason should not be separated nor opposed, but rather go forward together. The harmony between faith and reason means above all that God is not far away; He is not far away from our reasoning or from our lives; He is close to every human beings; close to our heart and close to our reason if we truly follow His path.

We must learn to purify our desires and our hopes. We must free ourselves from the hidden lies with which we deceives ourselves, God sees through them. For prayer to develop this power of purification, it must be something very personal, an encounter between my intimate self and God, the living God.

All serious and upright human conduct is hope in action.

God does not demand of us a feeling which we ourselves are incapable of producing. He loves us, he makes us see and experience his love, and since he has "love us first" love can also blossom as a response within us and discovers joy in truth and in righteousness - a joy in God which becomes his and her essential happiness.

Faith and reason are not alien to each other. Accordingly, all our experiences must be subjected to the canon of reason and reason in most cases is basically scientific reason whose foundation for knowledge is based on observable data.

When reason is restricted positively, then everything else becomes a matter of personal judgement or opinion. But, reason is not just restricted by the criteria of science.

Faith is a form of reasoning too. It takes the assumption from the experience that the order can be trusted. You ask a child to jump of the ledge and the child will hesitate but once the child knows that you can be trusted, he will jump without thinking, without "reasoning" be he knows that the one who asks for it can be trusted.

In fact, in many cases when you play with a trusting child, he will jump even when you are not ready to catch him. This shows that belief of faith is a firm of reasoning which cannot always be explained scientifically.

When we pray properly we can undergo a process of inner purification which opens us up to God and thus to our fellow human beings as well. In prayer we must learn what we can truly ask of God - what is worthy of God.

We must learn that we cannot pray against others. We must learn that we cannot ask for the superficial and comfortable things that we desire at this moment - that meager, misplaced hope that leads us away from God

Faith, hope and love go together. Hope is practised through the virtue of patience, which continues to do good even in the face of apparent failure, and through the virtue of humility, which accepts God's mystery and trusts him even at times of darkness.

God is love! Love is the light - and in the end, the only light - that can always illuminate a world grown dim and give us the courage needed to keep living and working. Love is possible, and we are able to practise it because we are created in the image of God.
